Welcome to our latest CHDCM newsletter! As we continue to navigate a real rollercoaster of a spring, at least in terms of temperatures, it does seem fitting that we will be celebrating Earth Day this week….and coming together as a community in care and concern for—in the late Pope Francis’ words—“Our Common Home.”
Moreover, this week’s NFL Draft will feature students from our Center for Sports Media covering the event as part of Pirates in the Field—and, for the first time, they will be joined by students from our own WSOU 89.5 FM, broadcasting from Radio Row. And that’s what it looks like to be part of the #1 College Radio Station in the nation—so keep checking our socials for updates from Pittsburgh! But that’s not all: read the articles below to check other amazing work that our students, faculty, and staff are doing, as well as the milestones of service to SHU that our community celebrated last week!
Hopefully, these articles will help give you a moment’s respite from the hectic pace of this time of year, as we all work to finish the semester and academic year in strong fashion. That said, as always, during this time of year it’s especially important to get rest, eat right, and practice self-care—and remember the many resources available on campus, including the priest community, UWill telehealth platform, Counseling and Psychological Services for students, and the Employee Assistance Program for faculty.
Finally—even though we’re all deeply immersed in the work of this semester—if you are a current CHDCM student and you haven’t registered yet for your classes, now is a great time to do so! As we head toward finals, don’t miss the chance to add the classes you want and need for the Fall semester!

Chelsea Chen is a third-year student in the Counseling Psychology Ph.D. program. As a young professional, Chelsea values finding community and ensuring that the voices of the next generation are highlighted when planning for her professional future. She holds three leadership roles in national organizations: Co-Connection Officer for American Psychological Association Division 35 Section 5 (Psychology of Women; Asian and Asian American Women), New Jersey Student Representative for APA Division 17 (Counseling Psychology), and Co-Communications Officer for the Asian American Psychological Association. Not only is Chelsea working hard in these executive positions, but she is also growing as a student at Seton Hall University.
Chelsea was invited to collaborate on a training workshop with her colleagues on the application of the therapeutic skill of self-disclosure in the context of broaching clinical distress in the face of political turmoil. Her research on multicultural competency training in counseling and clinical psychology programs informed this training. She also juggles research projects on Asian American gender socialization, anti-Black racism in United States minority communities, and doctoral students’ training experiences. Chelsea hopes to publish her multiple research projects by the end of 2026 and is excited to see where her research takes her next. Above all, Chelsea is a professional who values community, social justice, and collaboration; but she is also an individual who finds joy in the little things in life (i.e., that first sip of coffee or tea in the morning) and finds meaning in family, friends, and her pet cat.

SiriusXM’s Shawn “The Butcher” Winkler Coaches Students on Mastering the Mic
SiriusXM Program Director, on-air host, and WSOU superfan Shawn Winkler (aka Shawn “The Butcher”) recently hosted a workshop on how to become a better DJ and on-air personality! He helped our WSOU DJ’s fine-tune their presence on the mic. He played some of his on-air DJ breaks and had students critique them. He also worked one-on-one with our student DJ’s, listening to their air checks and offering individualized advice. Shawn visits WSOU annually to host this workshop—a favorite of our students—and he looks forward to it every year!
