Interdisciplinary UIC Project Examines Environmental Harm and Human Rights in Southern Africa |
|
|
University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) students from medicine, law, and public health recently collaborated to investigate toxic exposure and human rights abuses in Tsumeb, Namibia. Global Medicine (GMED) M4 student Diane Edwards, was part of the multidisciplinary team as her GMED capstone project. Partnering with the UN Special Rapporteur on Toxics and Human Rights, the team conducted field interviews and documented environmental harm caused by a local smelter. This mentored project provided students with the opportunity to navigate complex ethical codes and bridge the gap between local marginalized voices and international advocacy. Ultimately, the initiative aims to pressure global corporations and governments to address human rights abuses related to the toxic exposure and increase transparency. You can read more about it here. You can also read about Diane’s path as an advocate and changemaker here.
