Høst = skolestart!
A new start to the school year means a fresh perspective for many Norwegians and Americans alike. We're excited to offer a few great ways for you to jump-start your høst (autumn) with skolestart (back-to-school) activities on the Norway Block.
Celebrate the new expansion with alumni from the five Midwest Norwegian colleges. Help us collect backpacks for neighborhood kids getting back to the classroom. Take a Norwegian class at Mindekirken or pick up on your genealogy research again.
Know someone heading off to college?
Consider gifting a subscription to the Norwegian American Newspaper.
It's a well-known fact that students love getting a little mail in their campus P.O. box now and then. The Norwegian American is a great gift for those students with an interest in all things Norwegian--including recipes, news, interviews, local and international activities, and articles in Norwegian. Plus, they'll get online access to past articles and special content.
The Norwegian-American Newspaper is newly a program of Norway House, and is transitioning to a monthly publication rate. We're proud to align with America's oldest continually running Norwegian publication (since 1889)! But that doesn't mean you'll just get news from the Norway Block. We're committed to keeping the newspaper alive as a subscriber-based, nonprofit news source for the entire country. Join today!

Ut på tur: Golf Tournament
Ut på tur, aldri sur! Out for a walk, never grumpy. This common saying captures the heart of Norwegians’ relationship to the outdoors. At Norway House, we’ve made it a goal to get out more often. It’s just good for the soul.
This month, we’ll be out on the green at Theodore Wirth Golf Course. Many may recall our annual Golf Tournament which takes place during this time of the year. During this year of transition for Norway House, we rolled things back just a bit. Enjoy a fun, casual tournament with Norway House friends. What better way to enjoy the outdoors than over a round of golf!
Come join us for a fun golf outing at beautiful Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis, followed by a happy hour at Utepils Brewery along Bassett Creek nearby. Inclement weather? We’ll be guided by another Norwegian saying: Det finnes ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlige klær! There’s no bad weather, only bad clothing!
The tournament will be a “best ball scramble,” and Hole 12 will feature a “Closest to the Pin on Second Shot” contest in memory of our dear friend Jon Pederson.
Golfers are welcome to come a little early to enjoy lunch at the café on-site (not included). First tee time begins at 1:00pm
Tickets $75 | General Admission $65 | Norway House Members Includes tee time and cart rental.

Bokprat with Liv Marit Haakenstad
Liv Marit Haakenstad started doing genealogy research at the age of 12. Born in Lillehammer and raised in Biri, Norway, she has written more than a hundred articles and nine books on genealogy, Norwegian emigration, and genealogical technology.
As a consultant, Haakenstad often assists international heir-research firms and works frequently as a forensic genealogist. She has contributed to several genealogical TV shows, including Who Do you Think You Are? (BBC and Canada), and Norwegian Anno.
Having taught courses at Norway House before the pandemic, we're excited to host her for an informative and lively book talk in celebration of her latest release, A Guide to Norwegian Genealogy, Emigration, and Transmigration.
About the book
The first part of the book gives an overall view on the Norwegian emigration history, before taking you to Great Britain, which was one of several routes for transmigration. Further on, you will get an insight on what happened when Norwegian emigrants arrived in North America. The second part is about sources in the United States and Canada. What information can you find in these sources that show the way back to Norway? The book also thoroughly covers Norwegian sources. Finally, the whole book finishes off with a chapter about genealogical methods.
