Plan ahead for the 2020 U.S. annual conference

Your complimentary Conference Planner/To-Do List is highlighted below – please feel free to modify as needed.
#1 – Register
Register for the conference now while 'Early Bird' rates are in effect.  The earlier you register, the more you save.  Expect to be joining about 1,200 of your industry colleagues in Houston, February 11 - 13, 2020.
#2 – Exhibit and Sponsor
As of the time this story was written, only 7 exhibit booths remain and we are still 83 days ahead of the conference.  Sponsorship opportunities, though, are also available.  In 84 days that exhibit hall will be teaming with delegates representing hundreds of independent deployers, banks and credit unions, manufacturers, service and solution providers, and more.
#3 – Workshops
Workshops are a great opportunity to take a deep-dive into select topics.  They are included with your full registration, but seating is limited and you must select your workshops when you register.  If you did not do so, please let us know and we can add it to your registration.
#4 – Lodging
The HIlton Americas in downtown Houston is a great venue.  Don't miss the opportunity to secure a room at the conference hotel for an attractive rate.  Our room block and rate are available until January 21.  Register early as that block could sell out before then.
#5 – Attend, network, and learn
ATMIA members in particular should arrive early in order to attend committee meetings throughout the day on Tuesday, followed by the members-only Town Hall and the Opening Reception.  The educational program is exceptional, offering 25 sessions with three tracks of interest.
#6 – Have a little fun
When the exhibit hall doors close for the day, there is a lot to do in Houston.  The hotel is adjacent to the Toyota Center.  Their theater district can be found about 5 blocks away.  And the Houston Space Center is only a 40-minute drive.
Looking forward to seeing all of you there . . .
David Tente
Best regards to all,
David

ATMIA one-day summit exceeds expectations

ATMIA's ATM Cyber-security Summit last month in Mexico City was a resounding success by any measure.
Sponsored by ATMIA member EuroTechZam, the event drew a total of 80 registered delegates.  A full day of educational sessions was led off by the Central Bank of Mexico and included information from other speakers about ATM crime trends in the region, as well as strategies for combatting it.
This recently introduced format is available to any ATMIA member in any region.  The agenda can extend to the entire day, including lunch, exhibits and networking time.  Or, be a simple half-day program featuring a few key speakers.
To explore potential opportunities in the USA, Canada or Americas, contact David Tente.  For other regions, contact Dana Benson or the regional Executive Director.

ATMIA CEO Q&A: 'Cash and digital payments need to coexist

Mike Lee is the quintessential diplomat. The CEO of the ATM Industry Association greets you with a smile and a warm handshake. He is the sort of person who appears to always have time for everyone.

But in meeting him, what you quickly learn is that despite his pleasant demeanor, Lee is a man with strong convictions, fiercely devoted to defending the use of cash.

Last week at ATMIA Europe in Rome, ATM Marketplace caught with him over cappuccino for a long chat about the war on cash and the future of ATMs. We even asked him about bitcoin. .  Read more . . .

New cash cassette security white paper published

It is widely recognised in the industry that attacks against cash in ATMs are increasing in freequency and, in some countries, in severity  for example, when criminals use gas or solid explosives to get the ATM safe open. Attacks with gas and solid explosives introduce risks to humans in addition to their threat to property and assets.
If cash in the cassettes is not sufficiently protected, ATMs will remain vulnerable to physical attacks, resulting in considerable potential losses and collateral damage. When the risks become too high in a given area, ATMs are sometimes removed, causing inconvenience and loss of service for customers and the community.
The security of an ATM can be increased by early detection of any possible criminal activity. Detection needs to be as early as possible, because attacks nowadays can take as little time as three or four minutes. If a potential attack can be detected early by any means (smart cameras, AI, etc), there is time to take counter measures and prevent the attack.
ATMIA’s ATM Security Association (ASA) has published an updated white paper on ATM cash cassette security, Improving ATM Cassette Security with Innovation and Standardization.  It is available now to all ASA subscribers.

Advocacy

ATMIA participates in Skimming 2.0

ATMIA was again invited to participate in a meeting hosted by the U.S. Secret Service on skimming crime.  This year the event drew 129 participants that included international law enforcement, manufacturers, and other industry representatives.  USA Executive Director, David Tente, provided an overview of ATMIA efforts to assist the industry in battling this on going problem.
Other presenters included Secret Service investigators who discussed a case that involved a Cuban crew based in south Florida which has been operating as far north as New York and as far West as Utah.  They were primarily skimming cards at fuel pumps and encoding them on the fly, then using them to withdraw cash from ATMs.  The case was aided by a lot of assistance from operators and cooperation from different law enforcement agencies.  Agents were able to link 39 incidents that crossed state lines.  A number of suspects have been arrested and the case is still being prosecuted.
Instances of "host spoofing" also seem to be on the rise.  This can occur if data within the ATM is not fully encrypted.  Hackers are then able to manipulate data, including changing the dispense amount.  A number of "jackpotting" type attacks were also noted, but continue to be more common outside the U.S.
A more complete summary of the event will be available to ATMIA members shortly.

New This Year – Sponsor the 2020 Fly-in

Our meetings on Capitol Hill for the 2020 Fly-In will be all day Wednesday, March 25th, 2020.  Participants are also encouraged to attend a strategy meeting at 5:00pm ET on Tuesday, March 24 at the Hyatt Regency, Washington, DC
A sponsorship for this event is being offered.  The sponsor logo will be included on all communications between now and the actual event, as well for all follow-up coverage.  For more information about the Fly-In event or sponsorship, contact David Tente.
Since DC hotels tend to fill up well in advance of planned arrival dates, it is recommended that anyone planning to attend reserve a room now.  There is no charge for cancellations made by March 20, 2020.

Cashless ban updates

Amazon appears to be “doing a 180” with regard to its position on cash payments. In addition to reversing its strategy for the Amazon GO! Stores, online customers now have the option of paying for their orders in cash at certain Sav-a-Lot stores.
At the Federal level, ATMIA continues to support the bill introduced last May in the House of Representatives by Congressman Donald Payne and referred to the House Financial Services Committee. Although the bill now has 13 co-sponsors, including 5 Republicans, ATMIA members are encouraged to speak to their own Representatives and request that they too sign-on as a co-sponsor.
In August, Wisconsin became the latest of 13 jurisdictions to propose a ban on cashless retail establishments. What is of particular interest in this case, is that it is the first proposal sponsored by Republicans.
West Hollywood, CA increased that count to 14 as the City Council decided last month to require businesses to accept cash.  A memo explaining the April 1 proposal noted that “recent trends have moved businesses toward  ‘cashless payments’ including the use of cards or mobile devices in place of cash."
It went on to explain that “ . . . [cashless payments only] can be prohibitive for people who are underbanked or unbanked, who may not  have access to a debit or credit card.  Unbanked households are households that do not currently have a checking or savings account.  Underbanked households are households that have a checking and/or savings account but rely on alternative financial services, such as non-bank money orders, check-cashing services,  payday loans, rent-to-own services, pawnshop loans, or auto title loans at least once in the last 12 months. People with poor credit history, lack of understanding of the U.S. banking system, immigrant residents with language barriers, people lacking appropriate identification, and people living paycheck to paycheck are those most likely to be unbanked or underbanked.”

More sponsorship opportunities to benefit the U.S. Defense Fund

In addition to invoice renewal and direct contributions, there are other new options for supporting ATMIA advocacy.  A sponsorship for the 2020 DC Fly-in is available.  Contributors of $1,000 or more are listed as sponsors of our Stateside Associates compliance portal.  And members can sponsor our interactive Cashless Ban'd Wagon map for $1,500 per month.

Connections

U.S. security event debuts next June

ATMIA and ASA (the ATM Security Association) will host a new security event for the ATM industry.
Join us next June in Minneapolis, MN for the very first ATMIA USA Security Conference, focusing on a broad range of security topics impacting the ATM channel.  Although the program will primarily address U.S. market concerns, many new forms of attacks are “beta-tested” by criminals in other countries – which is why we will also incorporate emerging threats into the program, wherever they might be across the globe.

Our educational program will include financial institution and independent ATM deployers, law enforcement, manufacturers, and technology and service providers.  Learn more about emerging security threats, as well as new strategies for battling the familiar ones.

The conference website and online registration should be available later this week.  Interest in this new event is quite high and exhibitors have   already signed up to secure their place in the exhibit hall.  Sponsorship opportunities are also available.
