A Message from the President

My final term on the CTDA Board of Directors ends December 31, 2018. During my six years on the Board, I have served three years as Secretary and the past two years as President.
I have learned so much during these years of service - about horses; our wonderful members and volunteers; Dressage shows, both USEF/USDF Recognized and Schooling; as well as USDF and its educational offerings. I have also grown as a person and leader during this time.
I wish to express my sincere gratitude to my predecessor, Jen Thompson, and the current CTDA Board for their unfailing support and willingness to assume the myriad roles required for the successful functioning of CTDA. Remember, these folks are volunteers and work very hard to provide educational and dressage competition opportunities to our membership. I also wish to express my deep appreciation for all of our volunteers not currently serving on the Board. Without you, CTDA would not be a vibrant organization.

Lastly, although I am rotating off the Board, I am not “riding into the sunset”. I’ll be volunteering and always available to answer questions.
With deep gratitude for a very rewarding experience as CTDA President,
~Nan Holland

Meet Scot MacGregor:

Incoming CTDA President
Scot MacGregor rode his first Gaited Western Dressage test just two years ago. This September, he came home from the WDAA World Championships packing 14 World Championship titles with five different horses, including high-score championships in three categories. Every one of his horses scored in the 70s. I’ll just let that sink in. Read more here...

Bethany Gallagher and Fabiola

Bring Home the Championship Wins!

Congratulations to CTDA member Bethany Gallagher and her seven-year-old Hanoverian mare, Fabiola, for winning TWO championship titles at the 2018 Dressage Finals. Bethany and Fabiola scored 74.773% to take the Training Level AA Championship title, and they scored 72.794% against more than 30 riders to win the First Level AA Championship title. Here's what Bethany had to say about Fabiola after her win:
"She's just an amazing mare. She's so honest and accurate and tries so hard, plus she has great natural balance, suppleness and is forward and steady. She's'mesmerizing to watch. All of her basics are so solid and are really something we've focused on. We hope to put some muscle and weight on her, jump up to second level and maybe third...and be right back here next year."
A full recap of the event is here.
Fabiola!

Seeking Auction Donations and Volunteers for the CTDA Awards Banquet

The money we raise at the Annual Awards Banquet allows us to fund CTDA scholarships that directly benefit our membership. We're in need of a few volunteers to help before, after and during the event. Also, let us know if you have items you would like to donate for the auction, which is always fun and competitive! Laminitis: Improving the Odds with Mechanics

By Jennifer Miller-Bailey DVM, MS, CVA
The dreaded “L” word. No owner wants to hear their horse has been diagnosed with laminitis. Veterinarians dread diagnosing horses with laminitis. For most veterinarians it means sentencing the horse with a life of pain and likely death. That is because for most veterinarians, that is exactly what happens to the horse when the traditional approaches to laminitis are taken. Read more here...

Dr. Miller-Bailey's equine-only practice at Four Star Veterinarian Services focuses on pathologies and lameness associated with the equine foot. She has enjoyed competing horses her entire life. Her current horse is a 20-year-old Quarter Horse whom she competed in Eventing and Dressage. Now retired from competition, they spend their time together enjoying the trails. Her practice serves East Tennessee and Florida. She can be reached at:

Horsemanship Clinic with

Kathy Ziegler

Held on 10/3/18 at Music City Sporthorses in Thompson Station

Riders seeking to improve their partnership with their horses enjoyed a one-day unmounted horsemanship clinic with Kathy Ziegler. The day started with a demonstration of positive human leadership and respectful responses using Kathy's mare Carly. Next up was a demonstration with Sonya Wurster and her big boy, Pippin, who were just beginning their ground-manners journey together. Afterward, we worked on horseless simulations to better understand how our body language can help or undermine the trust and control of horses. Finally the last half of the day was dedicated to working with our own horses-- moving together through obstacles using the signals we had learned to eliminate pulling, pushing, etc. Special thanks to Bethany Gallagher for organizing and Kayla Johnson and Katie Dickerson at Music City Sporthorses for hosting this fun and informative clinic!

The new tests go into effect on Dec. 1st. There now. Gift problem solved. Purchase yours here: https://store.usdf.org/collections/frontpage/products/2019-usef-usdf-dressage-test-booklet
