SPRING SPORTS WRAP
Congratulations to Girls Lacrosse who secured another State Championship by defeating Rio Rancho 12-8. This is their 5th straight State Championshipthey've never lost one!

Our Boys Lacrosse faced tremendous odds all season long; with a fairly young team, they managed to pull together a successful end of season. Although unable to repeat a State Championship due to a loss to Duke City in the semifinals, they played championship-calibur LAX all the way down the final stretch.
The Boys and Girls Track Teams showed very well at the State Meet this past weekend. The boys and girls placed third and second, respectively. A few individual highlights: Patrick Boyd '17 brought home high-point honors, winning both the 100m and 200m races, as well as placing second in the high jump; Elizabeth Whiting '17 won the 800m in well under two-and-a-half minutes; Elizabeth was also part of the winning 1600m sprint medley team with Liza Doyle '17, Selma Flint '18, and Teslin Ishee '18; Hayden Colfax '20 won the 100m hurdles; and Sam Sparks '21 finished second in the triple jump. Prep Baseball finished very strong, despite attemps by nature's unseasonal bout of snow to thwart the end of the district season. The team placed fourth in a very competitive district with a record of 5-5. This earned them a 15th seed in the State Championship, where they faced the number 2 seed Santa Rosa Lions. After keeping the game tight through 5 innings, the Blue Griffins couldn't quite hang on and ended up losing 12-3. This season demonstrated a lot of heart from the players and was one of the more impressive showings on the diamond for our young program!

The Boys Tennis Team had a great showing placing third in districts and earned an at-large bid for the State Championships. As a number 7 seed, they faced the number 2 seed Mesilla Valley in the first round. The boys played valiantely, but ended up losing 7-2. There were also some outstanding individual play, with Joe Matthews '21 taking District Champion Honors and finishing 4th in the state. Cole Gartner '18 also earned a bid in the individual competition as the number 7 seed.

Congratulations to all Blue Griffins on a great spring season!
DANCING WITH THE SANTA FE STARS 2017WHAT AN AMAZING NIGHT!
Dancing With The Santa Fe Stars was an astronomical success! Each of our six teams took to the stage with their mesmerizing dances and were met by the standing applause of a captivated audience. The evening ended with Mayor Gonzales reading a proclamation marking April 22, 2017 "Santa Fe Prep Tuition Assistance and Breakthrough Santa Fe Day," and then guests taking their turn on the dance floor well into the wee hours.

The talents of our community grow this event each year and it has become one of the most popular fundraisers in Santa Fe—while the results are still being tabulated, we anticipate we raised more than $115,000 for Breakthrough Santa Fe and Tuition Assistance at Santa Fe Prep!

We thank the many people who made this event such a resounding success including: Co-Chairs Will Halm and Melinda Browning; Committee Chairs Adelma Hnasko and Sayuri Matthews; Judges Mayor Javier Gonzales, Irene Hofmann, Garrett Thornburg, and Nancy Zeckendorf; Dancers David Barker and Silke Hatch, Molly Boyd and Carlos Martinez, Terry Ellis '84 and Aline Ellis '85, Jay Heneghan and Lawrence Black, Jim Leonard and Aviva Baumann, Valerie Plame and Jonathan Guise; our silent auction donors; our valiant volunteers; and our generous sponsors. A big congratulations to People's Choice Winner Jim Leonard, Midas Award Winner Molly Boyd, and Judges' Award Winner Valerie Plame!

IN THE ARTS FEATURE
Twenty-nine Santa Fe Prep students attended the ISAS Arts Festival at Casady Day in Oklahoma City, OK last month. Disciplines represented included Jazz and Rock Band, 2D Art and 3D Art, Scenes & Monologues, Vocal and String Solos, Dance, Acoustic, and Improv. As well, students installed several large-scale pieces outdoors. The artists for one of these outdoor sculptures,Tristan Olrick '17, Elliott Thornburg '18, and Charlotte Wirth '21, were approached by the head of school to keep their piece “For Trees” (above left) permanently on display on campus to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the ISAS Arts Festival. As well, Tristan’s “Game Room” (above right) in collaboration with Giacomo Coppola’s '18 performance piece “Let’s Visit” (above right) received over 300 participants who wanted to discuss issues important to them. It was a very successful festival!

A series of Prep art instructor Alex Peña's artwork has been selected from the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts’ permanent collection to be included in an upcoming exhibition titled New Acquisitions: 2011-2017. The exhibition opened May 5, 2017, and runs through Jan. 21, 2018. Two of the four chosen pieces are large experimental etchings Alex did a few years back. Additionally, the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture has just acquired two of Alex's larger works for their permanent collection. Congratulations, Alex.
HISTORY DEPARTMENT FEATURE
The Santa Fe Prep History Department and the Council on International Relations hosted a symposium on the Syrian refugee crisis last month. Participants included the senior class, a group of 10th grade students, and a student delegation from the United World College.
In preparation, students wrote detailed policy proposals examining different diplomatic tools that were available to their respective nations. They role-played key Middle Eastern, European and North American nations and negotiated with the goal of generating a global response to the humanitarian crisis. Dr. Nadir Hashemi, Director of the Center for Middle East Studies at Denver University, also spoke about the roots and astonishing realities of the unfolding crisis. Students also heard from Iraqi student Abdulrahman Al-Rayyis, who shared his experiences about living with Syrian refugees and seeing their plight first hand.

Participants took away a clear understanding of how the Syrian civil war is impacting not only the Middle East but its broader implications for our global community. This symposium was one of five events, which included talks by former U.S. Ambassadors and region experts, that the History Department sponsored this spring. The intention is to encourage students to wrestle with many of the difficult issues that are currently consuming the Middle East.
In a related event, Former US Ambassador to Qatar, Susan L. Ziadeh visited Prep last week. The ambassadar met over lunch with a small group of tenth grade World History students who have been conducting their independent research on the history of the Middle East and Islam, particularly, on the status of women in Islam. Ambassador Ziadeh shared with students about her time in the Middle East and what it is like to serve in the foreign service. Then students presented their work and asked questions related to their research and her service in the region. Thanks to Russell Spinney and Nick Wirth for making these opportunities available to our students!

BREAKTHROUGH NEWS
The 2017 Davis New Mexico Scholars will receive diplomas at a ceremony at the Scottish Rite Temple on Thursday, May 19, at 5:30 pm. These students, all of whom are the first generation in their families to attain a college degree, come from throughout Northern New Mexico, including Santa Fe Prep, and will be attending colleges around the West and Midwest. Former Prep Trustee Andrew Davis, who has pledged $5 million dollars per year to fund this program, will address the graduates. For more information, please contact Sam Ritter.
GRIFFINS IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Luz Thunder Tlanextli '21 and Angel Jaime '21 were honored at a banquet on May 3 by the Santa Fe Civitan Club along with students from ten other Santa Fe area schools. Luz and Angel were chosen by the Civitans for their Youth Citizenship Award based on "their involvement in school, in their family, in the community, or in other ways they are good citizens." The award has been given to Prep students since 1996, and names of the recipients are engraved on plaques which reside in the Middle School Head's office.
AROUND & ABOUT
The Honors Environmental Science Class recently took a field trip to tour the Earthship Biotecture development just west of Taos. These homes operate off the grid using passive and active solar, are built with natural and recycled material, and harvest water and grow food indoors as part of their water recycling system. They are amazing homes that are being built around the world.
