MULTICULTURAL LIFE AT PREP
Programs and conversations are underway that bolster inclusivity at Santa Fe Prep. Some of these initiatives include the following:

On September and October 5, Jess Clark from the Solace Crisis Treatment Center will provide a one-hour training for all eighth graders entitled Gender 101. This training focuses on the different ways people express their gender and sex. The intention is to mitigate fear and prejudice around gender and sex identity and continue to foster inclusivity and kindness in our school community.

On September 21, Prep faculty, administration, and staff will train with Jess Clark to learn ways to support our trans, gay, and queer school community members.

September 15 - October 15 is National Hispanic Heritage Month. In recognition of the cultural contributions the Hispanic/Latino community brings to our lives, Albuquerque Poet Laureate Manuel Gonzales and former laureate Jessica Helen Lopez will give a poetry performance for middle school students in the Spoken Word Club and upper school students who are in Liz Friary's Creative Writing class.

December 7-10
is the annual NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools) Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC) and People of Color Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Prep will sponsor participation for four students (grades 9-11) and two faculty members. Interested students will need to complete an application form.

On January 25, Prep will hold its third annual Martin Luther King Junior Conference on Social Justice and Diversity. Speakers from the Santa Fe community offer workshops to students on many areas of community concerns including homelessness and hunger.

If you would like to know more about these events or have presentation ideas for the January conference, please contact Claire Romero at cromero@sfprep.org.
ATHLETIC NEWS
Congratulations to our inaugural winning Middle School Co-ed Soccer team who won its first game 3-0 versus Oak Grove Middle School last week. We can't wait to see what the season will bring!
Boys' Varsity Soccer recently traveled down to Socorro for a non-district match against the Warriors. BVS played shorthanded (due to various injuries and illness-related absences) and lost 2-0. Girls' Varsity Soccer meanwhile hosted Socorro back at home. The girls played a very solid match, but eventually succumbed, losing 2-1 in a tightly-fought match.
Our very young, talented Volleyball squad hosted Taos over the weekend, and although they ultimately lost to the 4A Tigers, each game was highly contested. According to Athletic Director Todd Kurth, "Despite the loss, the level of play is encouraging for the future of their season."
Cross Country competed in their first race of the fall season at the UNM invitational. The team did great overallthe average times of all the runners were noticeably better than last year at this time.
This Labor Day, several Prep teachers, alums, parents and students competed in the 8th annual Las Campanas Compadres Triathlon. The Compadres program is a non-profit that gives horse therapy and swim therapy lessons for free to people with disabilities. LCC funded over 1,500 lessons from the proceeds raised at last year's event.
Ariel Nathan '19, Kate Schiliro '18 and Drake Merians '16 volunteer their time to work with Dave in the water therapy program. This year's event had a record number of 210 participants in the race, including both Jim Leonard and Tove Shere who teamed up with LCC students and competed in the race as a team. Great job, Griffins! And kudos to Assistant Athletic Director Dave Caldwell who serves on their board and runs the swim therapy program!
SPRING IN SEATTLE
The Santa Fe Prep Middle School is pleased to announce our fourth annual Middle School Exchange Program with University Prep in Seattle, WA. This domestic cultural exchange program was developed to facilitate learning about a new culture within our own country, to help students appreciate our national diversity, and to prepare students for participation in Upper School foreign cultural trips and exchanges.

From March 13-17, 2017, Prep students will:
  • Explore the beautiful geography of the Pacific Northwest;
  • Learn about different cultures in each region, including indigenous people and later settlers;
  • Visit awesome attractions and eat delicious food;
  • Develop long-lasting friendships.
All middle school students are invited to apply. There is a limit of ten students for this trip, so reserve your spot now! Applications are being accepted and will be due by the Winter Break.

This is a true exchange program. Each SFP student will host the same student who hosted her/him. UPrep’s trip to Santa Fe will be April 3-7, 2017.

The all-inclusive final cost will be based upon the number of students who attend but will fall in the range of $700-$900. Limited financial assistance is available. Contact Chris Chakeres at cchakeres@sfprep.org or 505.795.7528 for more information.
