Where Small Steps Make a Difference in Middle East Crisis

At the 2024 Provost’s Forum, speakers emphasized the impact small actions by individuals and institutions can have, even during severe crises. Keynote speaker Robert Pape discussed how the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks and the ensuing Gaza war affected college campuses, heightening student fears. Panels also explored the complex challenges in addressing health, trauma, and education issues in Gaza and Israel, and the difficulty of finding common ground. Despite the intensity of the conflict, speakers highlighted hopeful examples of change driven by determined individuals, encouraging collective small actions to create momentum for greater impact.

Making Voter Registration Easy and Friendly

This week, Duke Votes celebrated Sept. 17--National Voter Registration Day--by providing multiple opportunities across the campus for people to register to vote. In addition to voter registration tables spread throughout campus, Duke Arts hosted a “Screen Printing: Promote the Vote” workshop. Participants learned how to screen-print a voting advocacy poster, plus learned important voter registration information.

Then and Now: Wallace Wade Stadium

In 1971, the Grateful Dead played there, and 35 years later, the Rolling Stones drew more than 35,000 fans. But for the most part, since it opened in 1929 as Duke Stadium, Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium has been home to the Blue Devils. It’s eponymously named for Duke’s head coach from 1931-1941 and 1946-1950. Wallace Wade led the Blue Devils to a 110-36-7 record and two Rose Bowl appearances.

Crop Diseases, Spoilage Can Hurt the Food Supply. Could Plant Prebiotics Help?

A new study from Duke researchers indicates that changes in the diversity of microorganisms living in certain plants can affect their ability to identify harmful invaders. The study, authored by Sheng Yang He, professor of biology, could eventually lead to new ways to help safeguard our food supply by potentially using prebiotics that support or reset the microbiome to help plants be better balanced and reduce losses in food crops caused by pathogens or spoilage.

This research was supported by funding from the National Institutes of Health.

Duke Celebrates Constitution Day

In addition to National Voter Registration Day, Duke also recognized National Constitution Day on Tuesday. The day honors the signing of the nation's governing document in 1787, and is celebrated by the University every year. University officials said Constitution Day offers a real opportunity for people to reflect on their civic responsibilities, particularly in an important election year.

Duke Alumnus Named Udall Native American Graduate Fellow

Duke Alum Ayden Case (T’22) has received the Udall Native American Graduate Fellowship in Tribal Policy. The fellowship recognizes Native American and Alaska Native graduate students who are currently pursuing advanced degrees in health care fields, and who have demonstrated a commitment to Native health care. Case, a member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina from Knoxville, TN, is one of three scholars chosen nationwide.

Climate Change Is Bringing New Health Threats, and the School of Medicine Has a Strategy

Climate change is impacting health, from rising deaths due to extreme heat to increasing cases of kidney diseases in youths. Duke School of Medicine has developed a research strategy to address current and future medical concerns related to the climate crisis. In this video, Dr. Mary Klotman and Dr. Robert Tighe discuss the school's interdisciplinary research efforts to mitigate these effects on community health.
