Urge Turkey to Return Christian Churches

This Thursday, June 26 at 9:00 am, the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee will vote to accept H.R. 4347, the Turkey Christian Church Accountability Act.
Introduced by Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA) and Eliot Engle (D-NY), the legislation would require the U.S. State Department to submit an annual report to Congress regarding the return of stolen Christian churches and properties in Turkey and occupied Cyprus. Prior to the proposal of this resolution, a measure (H. Res. 306) was passed in December 2011 calling “upon the government of Turkey to honor its international obligations to return confiscated Christian church properties and to fully respect the rights of Christians to practice their faiths.”
The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) announced that today, June 24, is a day for concerned constituents to call their congressman and utilize social media to urge support for this measure. All supporters of religious freedom must contact their legislators to support H.R. 4347 and then to find creative ways to use the hashtag #ReturnChurches in their Facebook, Twitter, and other social media posts.

The Turkish government is determined to stop this religious freedom measure. Many Turkish American organizations have also strongly appealed for the rejection of H.R. 4347, including the Assembly of Turkish American Associations; Federation of Turkish American Associations; Turkish American Committee Centers and Mosques; and the Azerbaijan American Council.
Urgent action is needed.
