Departmental Orientation

Most graduate students can expect to participate in an orientation specific to their academic department before the start of classes. Details about any additional sessions/trainings for certain programs or graduate assistantships will be shared by graudate departments.
If you have questions about your graduate program, course registration, or graduate assistantship, please contact your graduate department.

Continuing Online Orientation Modules

Be prepared to work your way through the upcoming Canvas modules that will be launched in mid-July and cover need-to-know information for maintaining status as an international student and being part of the Miami community. Understanding the information in these modules will be necessary to complete both the online and in-person orientations, and is vital to your future success as a Miami student.

Phones and Technology

All unlocked, GSM-ready phones will work in the U.S. once you activate a SIM card after your arrival. You can order a SIM card and set up a U.S. phone number before your arrival through CampusSIMS/Mint Mobile. Students can also receive a SIM card when they arrive to campus. During the in-person orientation there will be time to set up phone service through the MiTech Campus Store or at other stores in Oxford.
The MiTech Campus Store also has a Miami Student Laptop Program. If you plan to bring a laptop computer or electronic device from home, consider U.S. electrical outlets and charging compatibilities.
More packing suggestions will be shared in the next orientation newsletter. In the meantime, review the following top tech apps for Miami.

Miami's Academic Support Resources
During your studies at Miami, there may be moments when you need to utilize additional resources to ensure high-quality academic work. Several campus resources are available to you at no cost as a student.

The Rinella Learning Center
offers learning assessments, academic counseling and coaching, academic interventions, a study strategies course, a workshop series on effective study strategies, individual and group tutoring in high-demand subjects, and other specialized services.

There are two writing centers at Miami. The Howe Writing Center and English Language Learner Writing Center recognize that all writers have more to learn and provide free support to Miami students.  The Howe Writing Center offers help with academic, personal, and professional writing at any stage in the writing process, from brainstorming to polishing. The ELL Writing Center offers more specialized help for students whose first language is not English and who need particular assistance with grammar, word usage, style, and punctuation.
