FLC's 57th annual Hozhoni Days celebrated Indigenous culture, history, and traditions, including a renowned powwow, delicious cuisine, and a creative market.

Hozhoni Days Powwow draws historic crowd

The 57th annual Hozhoni Days drew a historic crowd of nearly 2,000 people to Whalen Gymnasium. Three vibrant events spanning March 29-31 provided a time for people to gather, dance, sing, heal, and celebrate traditions that are thousands of years old. 

Snow Studies Series: FLC’s Ski Resort Operations Certificate

As snowfall and winter recreation visitor patterns continue to fluctuate, ski resorts need trained professionals who can adapt business practices now more than ever. To fill that need, Lorraine Taylor, associate professor of Tourism & Hospitality Management, created a 12-credit certificate program in 2016.

Alumna confirmed as newest member of FLC Board of Trustees

Stacey DeFore (Business Administration, ‘94) was confirmed to the FLC Board of Trustees this week, beginning the role of a lifetime for her as a student advocate and partner to her alma mater.

Chemistry alum wins scientific dance competition

The American Association for the Advancement of Science created the "Dance Your Ph.D." video contest, which invites scientists to explain their Ph.D. thesis through interpretative dance. For chemist and flow artist Checkers Marshall (Chemistry, '16), it was a match made in nerd heaven.

Hyson named All-Colorado Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Zach Hyson, captain of FLC's football team, was named the All-Colorado Scholar-Athlete of the Year. In addition, fifteen football players from FLC were named to the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame Academic All-Colorado Team.

  • Gilda Yazzie (Business Administration, '97) clinched one of the Durango City Council seats vacated by Mayor Barbara Noseworthy and Councilor Kim Baxter. Yazzie's grassroots campaign style, priorities, and experience were key factors in winning the race. 

  • Sanitas Cycles is a titanium bicycle frame building operation co-founded by David (Environmental Studies, '20) and John Siegrist. With his father’s work at DEAN Bicycles as the backdrop of his childhood in Boulder, Colorado, Dave started working on bikes after graduating from FLC.

  • In a column for The Durango Herald, Charles Hakes, a senior lecturer of Physics & Engineering, discusses the field of cosmology and its efforts to explore some of the biggest questions about the universe, such as the nature of dark matter and the possibility of multiple universes.

  • Writing for The Durango Herald, Andrew Gulliford, professor of History, describes the beauty and biodiversity of Arizona's San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area. Gulliford focuses on the various bird species found in the area, their unique songs and behaviors, and the importance of the riparian habitat and efforts to preserve it.

  • Judith Reynolds, the founder of the 23-year-old Life-Long Learning Lecture Series at FLC, was presented with the 2023 Extraordinary Woman Award last week by the Women’s Resource Center of La Plata County.

  • In an op-ed for The Durango Herald, Ben Waddell, assistant professor of Sociology, discusses the various factors contributing to the decline of trust in the United States, including political polarization, misinformation, and the erosion of institutions like the media and government.

That's hawksome

Douglas Dupont (Journalism & Multimedia Studies, '19), KDUR's music manager, was named Music Director of the Month by the North American College and Community Radio Charts. Dupont has been involved with KDUR for about eight years, initially learning of the station after a 2015 tour of FLC.
