Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is a proven strategy to improve student learning outcomes, reduce negative behaviors, encourage participation, and create positive classroom communities. But what does this look like in science class? X-STEM All Access lesson writer Jess Noffsinger presented easy to apply answers to teachers at the National Science Teaching Association Conference in Denver.

As science teachers attempt to help students fill the many learning gaps that resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic, social-emotional learning has come to the forefront of the educational community. However, many teachers are struggling to come up with ways to build these skills into their classrooms in meaningful ways. This workshop provided teachers with an opportunity to do just that. The first part of the session focused on an overview of the CASEL framework for social-emotional learning. They then participated in five activities that they could bring to their students. Finally, teachers received information about the FREE X-STEM All Access Lesson Plan Library to find specific SEL lessons to fit within their content area so that they are ready to bring these strategies to their classroom!
