Notre Dame’s Center for Civic Innovation joins Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society to foster data-driven advancements in South Bend communities

The University of Notre Dame Center for Civic Innovation (CCI) is strengthening its connection to applied research by merging with Notre Dame’s Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society. The merger will allow the CCI to expand existing research and education opportunities across campus, and enhance its data-driven approach to increasing South Bend’s civic engagement.

What do AlphaFold2, ESM1&2, ChatGPT, GPT-4, DALL-E, and a growing list of generative AI methods have in common? The word disruption comes to mind. Those of us who started our love affair with AI, because we wanted to advance scientific inquiry and the human condition, are familiar with disruptions.
Through representative examples, Shehu will showcase her laboratory’s work on generative AI before and after deep learning.

Data alone can’t solve our problems.
In fact, data often creates more problems than they solve. The way we quantify and qualify impact defines our values and what we mean by “good data.” In this talk, Professor Sam Scarpino of Northeastern University will describe how the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic highlighted longstanding issues around equity, privacy, and sovereignty, which can’t be solved by technology alone.

| Notre Dame-IBM Tech Ethics Hackathon: Calculating the ROI of AI Ethics for Organizations

Hosted by the Notre Dame-IBM Technology Ethics Lab, hackathon participants will code and iterate on ideas for calculating the return on investment of AI ethics while networking with professionals from IBM, LogicaNow, TechBetter, and Notre Dame.
Winners will be selected by a panel of expert judges who will evaluate the code’s accuracy and alignment with the research paper titled "The Return on Investment in AI Ethics: A Holistic Framework", as well as the practicality and quality of the ideas generated by participants.

| Call for Abstracts: Civic Science & Ethics in the Age of AI: Building Trust Symposium

The Public Communication of Science and Technology (PCST) network invites you to submit abstracts for a three-day symposium that aims to bridge the widening gaps between academia and the public when it comes to the understanding of science.
The event will bring together various stakeholders to explore innovative strategies for effective science communication and public engagement, emphasizing what it will take to build trust with audiences in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). The deadline to submit an abstract is Wednesday, April 10, 2024.
