CHOPR Researchers In the Spotlight
Dr. Matthew D. McHugh has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM)
Election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine. New members are elected by current members through a process that recognizes individuals who have made major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care, and public health. The NAM Election committee cited McHugh's leadership in the bringing about the "largest-ever trial applying organizational redesign theory to improve hospital clinician well-being and patient safety in five European countries." More
Dr. Linda Aiken receives the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) Living Legend Award
The official designation took place happened on October 30 at the Academy’s Transforming Health, Driving Policy conference. This is the Academy’s highest honor. The Living Legend ceremony honoring Dr. Aiken included a rousing program in which AAN executives and nurse leaders acknowledged the impact of Aiken's pioneering research on nurse education, improving patient outcomes, safe nurse staffing, and nurse retention. Watch the program from this link
"Linda Aiken has made a bigger impact than Florence Nightingale in her time," said AAN Living Legend, Margaret L. McClure, as part of her presentation on Dr. Aiken's legacy.
Penn Researchers meet to discuss new opportunity to help change scope of practice restrictions.
Organized by the Leonard Davis Institute and co-sponsored by the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research, the "Expanding Scope of Practice After Covid-19" conference brought together top experts in every aspect of restrictive state scope of practice (SOP) laws for Nurse Practitioners, APRNs and other health professionals. CHOPR Researchers, Drs. Margo Brooks Carthon and Matthew McHugh focused on the gaps and negative impact of current SOP restrictions on vulnerable populations.
In other news....
Dr. Linda Aiken has made Clarivate's "Highly Cited Researcher" 2020 list. Linda earned this distinction because her research ranks among the top 1% most cited works for field and year in the Web of Science!.
LDI published an excellent blog by Dr. Rebecca Clark about her recent paper in Birth with colleague Dr. Eileen Lake. The CHOPR researchers looked at hospital variation in spontaneous vaginal birth rates and found wide variation across hospitals and lots of room for improvement.
A recent CHOPR paper in Medsurg Nursing by Rachel French et al. is the impetus behind an educational activity jointly provided by Anthony J. Jannetti, Inc. and the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses. Readers complete the learning activity and the online CNE evaluation to receive 1.3 contact hours.
Following graduation next year, Kathryn Riman will join the Department of Critical Care Medicine as a Clinical Research, Investigation, and Systems Modeling of Acute illness (CRISMA) Research Fellow at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Dr. Margo Brooks Carthon leads CHOPR team to study the racial disparity gap in survival after in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA).
The new study set for publication in Medical Care is the first of its kind to describe the relationship between medical-surgical nurse staffing and its association with racial disparities in survival after IHCA. It suggests that while the likelihood of survival to discharge after an IHCA is lower for black patients than for white patients in both poorly staffed and well-staffed hospitals, the survival difference produced by better staffing is more pronounced for black patients than for white patients.
