Meet Your Online Instructor: Dr. Marcel Paret

Dr. Marcel Paret is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and a Senior Research Associate with the South African Research Chair in Social Change at the University of Johannesburg. Marcel is interested in researching the politics of class formation, globalization and marketization, race and migration, labor and social movements, protest and community politics and the causes and consequences of precarity. His article, “Critical Nostalgias in Democratic South Africa” (Sociological Quarterly, 2018), won the Best Faculty Article Award from the Sociology of Development Section of the American Sociological Association. Marcel also recently completed the redevelopment of SOC 3140 (Social Theory) online, featuring customized multimedia course readings, which launches live this semester.

Utah Film Cdnter Drive-In: The Hate U Give

On Friday, September 11, from 7:30pm - 11:00pm,
the Tanner Center for Human Rights is sponsoring an upcoming screening of ‘The Hate U Give’ at the Utah Film Center! A discounted rate is available for students by using the code: SWOOP. All Utah Film Center drive-ins follow public health safety protocols for COVID. 


Based on the best-selling novel, 'The Hate U Give' tells the story of Starr Carter, who lives in two worlds: the poor, black neighborhood where she resides, and the mostly white prep school she attends. This uneasy balance is shattered when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood friend by a policeman. Facing pressures from all sides, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what’s right.
