Partner Spotlight
Whisper Foundation
We would like to thank the Whisper Foundation, a legacy of the Gary E. Milgard Family Foundation, for their generous grant toward our Book Up Summer program in the Tacoma School District. This grant will pay for 687 Kindergarten scholars to receive 12 free new books, each! That equals 8,244 new books going to loving homes. For many of these students, these will be the first books they can call their own. Thank you for supporting kids and reading!
Staff Picks
Page Ahead’s newest program Story Leaders takes preschool students beyond being passive listeners, to being active learners during story time. Story Leaders uses specific early reading techniques that can help students actively participate in the story reading – building confidence, vocabulary, and reinforcing language skills that are essential to learning to read. Page Ahead partners with early learning centers across Washington State to bring Story Leaders to children from low-income families. Here are the book titles the children will be receiving from Page Ahead this October:
In Memoriam
"This beloved children’s author didn’t want a funeral. She said read to a child instead."
We were saddened to hear of the passing of beloved author Anna Dewdney this month. Her children's book series "Llama Llama" is one of the most popular titles with our young readers and volunteers alike. Read full article here.  Thank you for creating wonderful books for children, Ms Dewdney.  You will be missed.
Volunteer of the Year
Page Ahead is proud to present the 2016 Sarajane Beal Award for Volunteer Excellence to Maria-Teresa Vincens (on left with Page Ahead past President, Alena Shafer). A journalist by trade, Maria-Teresa  first offered her writing skills to Page Ahead in 2011 volunteering on our newsletter, Chapters. She has gone on to write an article about Page Ahead published in Prime Time. A fabulous Story Time Volunteer, she also helps train the new volunteers, showing them the secrets of her success with the kids. Maria-Teresa’s warmth and humor have enriched our lives as well as our programs here at Page Ahead, and we are grateful to her for sharing her many talents with us!
Fall is Workplace Giving Time
Companies large (Microsoft) and small (Attendible), as well as government entities, offer opportunities for employees to give at work – generally via payroll deduction.  It’s convenient for the donor and it helps non-profits by providing a stable quarterly basis for support!
