And Now For Something Different! Griffin Productions Presents…Dancing With the Santa Fe Stars.

SAVE THE DATE! On Saturday, April 18th, at the Santa Fe Farmers Market Pavilion, Santa Fe Prep is dancing for two unbeatable causes—Breakthrough Santa Fe and Tuition Assistance. Three women and three men will compete for the Mirrorball trophy as remarkable hidden talent is revealed. These six volunteer dancers will be paired with professionals who will choreograph and teach them a dance they will perform together. Our guest judges (and we’re finalizing them right now) will critique their performance (all in good, fun, of course) and the audience will wine and dine and vote for their favorite dance.

Our Santa Fe Stars are (in alphabetical order) Mayor Javier Gonzales, Adelma Hnasko ’92, Fay Kirby, Sheena Neese, Trey Naylor, and Hugo Sena. Stay tuned for a dancin' good time!
UPCOMING EVENTS
It's OOOM Time!

Once a year, gifted Middle School writers at Santa Fe Prep call the community together to hear their poetry, prose, fiction, and opinions at a literary gathering named “Out Of Our Minds,” or OOOM. Parents and classmates leave the gathering astonished, delighted, awed, provoked into deeper reflection, and always with a deeper appreciation (and healthy envy) of high-achieving Middle School students.

You are most enthusiastically invited to attend this year’s celebration on Thursday, February 26th, at 5:00 pm in the Santa Fe Prep Library. Light refreshments will be provided.
Clean Out Your ClosetsRummage Sale is April 10th and 11th!

The annual SFP Rummage Sale is a much anticipated community event. To ensure we raise a lot of money for Tution Assistance and  Breakthrough Santa Fe, we are asking you to donate any clean, unbroken items that you no longer need. We will have many drop-off times the week of the sale in April, but if you have things to donate now, there is room in the library basement—just call Marcia Lenihan at 505.795.7516 to arrange a drop off. If you have large furniture, then call chair Jill Gerber at 505.670.9724 to arrange a pick up at your house. We also could use your time!  Please consider volunteering the week of the sale. Click here for the available times and to read a short description of what you might do. Thank you! Together we will make this year’s Rummage Sale a HUGE success.
DWI March of Sorrow
The upcoming March of Sorrow on Tuesday, February 17th is a remembrance of victims of DWI in New Mexicoadults and youth come together to stand as witnesses to the needless loss of life that DWI has delivered to our families and community. Prep students march in recognition of former students Kate Klein and Alyssa Trouw, who lost their lives to a drunk driver in 2009. Activities include speeches by state leaders, and Santa Fe Prep seniors Zoe Unverferth and Molly Montgomery will perform a short musical piece. Students walk around the state capitol in silence honoring the victims of DWI in New Mexico.
BREAKTHROUGH PROFILE
Meet Gabe Falkner and Luciano Brascoupé!

Now the best of friends, Gabe and Luciano came from separate schools and met at Breakthrough in 7th grade. Each was the only representative from their elementary schools, and they quickly became close. Luciano says that he loves Breakthrough because his friends are like family. Gabe echoes this sentiment, saying that the best thing about Breakthrough is all of the like-minded kids who help him feel comfortable being himself. Now both 8th graders at Santa Fe Prep, Gabe and Luciano lean on each other often for support and carry the Breakthrough spirit to the Prep community.

MULTICULTURAL LIFE AT PREP
MLK Mini-Conference: Exploring Diversity and Justice

Martin Luther King Jr.’s life is often seen as a struggle against racial injustice. In fact, he believed that the condition of every life affects every other life. From this premise, Prep’s mini-conference in celebration of Dr. King discussed poverty, hunger, health care, gender diversity, environmental justice, rumors and gossip, and violence. We built on the many different programs in place at Prep that help our community to improve the world.
What did the students gain from this experience?  For many students, the conference was an eye-opener because it delved into more specific facts and topics. Some student reactions:

- “I didn’t know how poorly we were doing with hunger.”
- “This presentation on Health Care was fantastic. I hardly knew that wealth, poverty, and where you live affect your ability to have care.”
- “I always knew that every person has a background, a story, and this session got me interested even more.”
- “Before, I hardly knew anything about transgender people. I was surprised to learn that transgender women are put into men’s prisons.”

Thank you to all the Prep faculty and administration who worked as assistant teachers and participants to make this conference a success.

THANKS &
SHOUT OUTS
Thank you, Roybal Family and Water Boyz!
We are fortunate to have many generous families at Prep whose contributions make a significant difference to our community. Among them are David and Melissa Roybal, parents of 7th grader Jerome (shown above with his grandparents), who wanted to give back to the school in a creative way. They decided to donate all of the water dispensers on campus, as well as the water for them. We are thrilled--and well hydrated--with this wonderful donation (which includes one for our athletes in the gym). Thank you, Roybals! Their family business is Water Boyz.
Thank You for Your Food Drive Support!

Thanks to all of you, we have donated more than 9 barrels of food and supplies to The Food Depot. That means our community has provided at least 1,350 meals, or enough for more than 335 families of four. A big thank you also goes to juniors Greta Brown and Sammie Walimaki for leading the food drive and baking treats for all donors.

Congratulations,
Speech & Debaters!

Our Speech & Debate Team demonstrated fine work at a recent tournament at La Cueva High School.Team members who attended: Pema Baldwin, Harsh Bhundiya, Simone Catanach, Justice Colfax, Giacomo Coppola, Alisandro Fernandez-Leger, Dario Fernandez-Leger, Cypress Hayunga, Mike Laposata, Gina Maran, Wyatt Merians, Sarah Raboff, Adriana Sanchez, Saul Shukman, Ashley Thomas, and Samantha Whitegeese.

WELLNESS WATCH
Teen Moods and Depression

Late winter/early spring is a time of shifting weather patterns. One moment it’s sunny and we are shedding our jackets and sweaters. The next moment we are bundling up again and stoking the fire. Like the weather, teen moods can shift, keeping parents guessing. Moodiness is often considered synonymous with adolescence, which leaves many parents wondering when it’s time to worry.
