Addiction Research and Minority Mental Health in the St. Louis Community
Dr. Devin Banks came to UMSL in 2020 and hit the ground running — and she hasn’t stopped.
An assistant professor of clinical psychology, Banks works across a variety of collaborative research initiatives focused on addiction, mental health, and racial disparities to improve outcomes and promote racial equity
To start, she directs the Racial Equity in Addiction across the Lifespan Collaboration (REAL Lab), an interdisciplinary, collaborative effort that launched in spring 2021 “to improve racial equity in the research, treatment, and outcomes of substance use and behavioral health.” The REAL Lab’s goal of using practical methods and community engagement to increase the relevance of research for minoritized groups is also a major tenant of Banks’ own research that addresses the intersection of addiction science and minority mental health. | Read the Full Story

NEW COMPLIANCE REPORT
New Report to Help UMSL PIs More Easily Review Grant Expenditures
In order to better serve UMSL faculty and provide timely information regarding grants, the Office of Sponsored Programs Administration now distributes a standardized monthly project report to principal investigators (PIs) designed to make reviewing grant expenditures easier and more convenient.
The first monthly email was sent to PIs the week of Nov. 14, 2021, and the report link will be sent to PIs during the week of the 14th of each month going forward. Please note that the reports are run in Columbia and come from an MU email address.
The emails provide a link to your personalized report showing expenditures related to all your open projects for the previous month for your review. Regular review of your project expenditures satisfies UM Policy 27002 (Allowable Costs and Costs Principles), which requires that PIs perform a timely "compliance review of costs" to ensure allowability of costs in accordance with Uniform Guidance and/or the terms of a specific contract or grant. PLEASE make sure you certify on the bottom of the last page of your reports by clicking the link.
While this new report offers information in an easily accessible, concise format with which you can more quickly identify and have more time to correct any issues, it is simply an improved starting point for expenditure review. Make sure you continue working with your departmental staff.
Departmental fiscal staff are aware of this new report; they have access to run reports and review them with you when needed. If you have any questions or concerns, please let your fiscal officer or our office (ora@umsl.edu) know.
Funding Agency Updates: NIH, NSF
The National Institutes of Health(NIH) has issued a new Policy on Data Management and Sharing (effective Jan. 25, 2023); the National Science Foundation (NSF) offers a Comprehensive Guide for New NSF Current & Pending Support (June 2021); and the NSF has updated and enhanced the Research.gov, NSF Public Access Repository, and NSF.gov Award Search systems (Nov. 22, 2021).

Midwest Biomedical Accelerator Consortium (MBArC)

The Midwest Biomedical Accelerator Consortium (MBArC), an NIH Research Evaluation and Commercialization Hub (REACH), is a partnership led by the NIH, the University of Missouri, and the University of Kansas Medical Center, aimed at accelerating the translation of discoveries originating from academic research into products that improve health. MBArC bridges the gap between academic research and industry by providing translational researchers with proof-of-concept funding and training to perform experiments and generate data that can attract follow-on funding from federal sources, investors and strategic partners to continue commercialization of the technology. All technologies with the potential to directly impact human health (e.g., therapeutic, diagnostic, device, tool, software) are considered for funding.

NCATS Panel Discussion Using SBIR/STTR Funding for Innovations in Translational Science
Join the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2021, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. for a panel discussion with SBIR/STTR grantees who have used NCATS funding and resources to develop transformative innovations in translational science. Hear about their innovations, their inspirations, and the lessons they have learned while building their businesses (Recursion Pharmaceuticals, Intabio and GoDX).
Who Should Attend? Academic entrepreneurs, small biotech and/or life sciences technology businesses, technology transfer organizations, and entrepreneurs from women-owned and socially and economically disadvantaged (8a) small businesses are encouraged to attend.
Discuss Your Project One-on-One with NCATS. To arrange a one-on-one meeting to discuss your project ideas and related questions, please email the NCATS Office of Strategic Alliances at NCATS-SBIRSTTR@mail.nih.gov and include a non-confidential executive summary describing your SBIR/STTR proposal with any specific aims you intend to address within your application.

Your tech transfer staff work to analyze the technology regarding intellectual property protection and the market need to determine whether patent applications should be filed and/or copyrights should be registered. For those inventions that can be protected (and even some that cannot), we then look for potential industry partners, which could include established companies and/or startup ventures, to license and commercialize the discovery.
We also process all Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs), Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs), and research-related fee-for-service agreements, among others, for UMSL.
