Anyone who's survived a Shanghai summer can agree on one truth: it's extremely hot. But you might be surprised to learn that there's a reason for the city's heat. Because of urban heat island effect, cities tend to be much hotter than rural areas, but careful climate change-oriented urban planning can mitigate the rise in temperature.

"Storytelling is another form of combat, because you find that you have to arrest your own story from other people… There is always this tendency for people to tell other people's stories, to justify their own ambitions, their own plans, exploitation. So storytelling is also an act of retrieving your own reality from other people in one way or another. It's integral, as long as there is struggle between human beings and human communities, storytelling is going to continue to play a critical part, almost at the level of warfare by other means… Reformulating your own identity on your own terms. It's an obligation of dignity, self assertion, recognition."
— Wole Soyinka, 1986 Nobel Laureate and Arts Professor of Theater at NYU Abu Dhabi, in conversation with NYU Shanghai students on December 1.
