NYU Shanghai Welcomes 2024 Master’s and PhD Cohort

A new cohort of master’s and PhD students are embarking on their academic journeys at NYU Shanghai. Approximately 230 new students were admitted to the master’s and PhD programs, hailing from countries such as China, the United States, Indonesia, Russia, and Peru.

Center for Computational Chemistry Leadership Changes The NYU-ECNU Center for Computational Chemistry at NYU Shanghai has announced that Associate Professor of Chemistry William Glover will assume the role of co-director and the Center’s founding director, Professor of Chemistry John Zhang, will transition to a new role as director emeritus.

What I'm Working on: Wei-Min Wang
Visiting Professor of Mathematics Wei-Min Wang grew up in Shanghai, studied at MIT and Princeton University, and is currently a research director in the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in France. Wang says joining NYU Shanghai as a visiting professor has helped her find a way to come back home.

• Nearly 300 students attended the NYU Shanghai 2024 Fall Career Fair held on September 20. The Center for Career Development welcomed 60 participating companies, over 20 of which offered internship and full-time positions to international students.

• Congratulations to Dean of Business Chen Yuxin who was invited to give a keynote at the 2024 Luohan Academy Annual Digital Economy Conference initiated by Alibaba earlier this year. Other notable conference speakers include Thomas Sargent, Bengt Holmström, and Zhu Min.

• NYU Shanghai’s Virtual Poetry Post is now accepting poetry submissions! Intended for the reading pleasure of the entire NYU Shanghai community with the goal of providing a common cultural experience for everyone on campus, the Virtual Poetry Post features poetry written by current NYU Shanghai students, faculty, and staff. To submit a poem, please see the instructions and send your submission as a Word attachment to clg4@nyu.edu.

• Congratulations to the TEDxNYU Shanghai 2023-2024 team! For the first time, one of the TEDx talks from 2024’s ‘Unfolding Apex’ Conference has been selected for the TED.com platform. The talk "Unveiling Company Cultures" by Marion Campan, a French entrepreneur who spoke on her journey to improve work standards in China and around the world, has received over 500,000 views so far. here.

Can Street View Data Improve Public Health?
NYU researchers analyzed two million Google Street View images from New York City streets to evaluate the utility of this digital data in informing public health decision-making. Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), their findings show that combining street view images with other knowledge grows its potential.

Speaker Kuang Yu worked as a postdoc in Princeton University from 2013 to 2016 and later joined D. E. Shaw Research as a research scientist in 2016, until he became an Assistant Professor at the Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute in 2018.
