NYU Shanghai Unveils Dangdang Auditorium

On September 11, NYU Shanghai held an unveiling ceremony for the Dangdang Auditorium in recognition of the longstanding generosity of Peggy Yu, co-founder and executive chairwoman of Dangdang.com, one of China’s biggest e-commerce platforms.

Exploring China on Two Wheels

It was back on the bikes again for the 2025–26 Chancellor’s Discover China Series. On its third community cycling tour, Chancellor Tong Shijun invited 40 students, 15 faculty, and 15 staff members to spend the day cycling and exploring scenic Yuandang Lake which straddles Shanghai and Suzhou.

Pianist Kong Xiangdong Speaks on Music and Life

On November 6, world-renowned pianist Kong Xiangdong returned to NYU Shanghai for a deeply moving conversation with Vice Chancellor Jeffrey Lehman, exploring the power of music, resilience, and the human spirit. More than 400 attendees filled the auditorium, with some traveling from outside Shanghai to join the event.

2025 VINS Annual Conference

Over the past several years, events such as US–China trade tensions and the Russia–Ukraine war have highlighted the far-reaching impact of geopolitical shocks on asset valuations, capital mobility, and overall financial stability. In an increasingly fragmented global landscape, understanding how geopolitical forces transmit through financial systems and shape market dynamics has become both a pressing challenge and a critical frontier of academic inquiry.

The conference will feature keynote speeches by leading scholars, research paper presentations, and a panel discussion that brings together academic and policy perspectives.

As we celebrate the holiday season, we are delighted to invite fellow alumni to the opening of the NYU Shanghai Alumni Lounge, a new dedicated space at the heart of campus for alumni from NYU Shanghai and all NYU schools. Created to foster connection and community, the Lounge will serve as a home for alumni engagement and a bridge between alumni, students, and the university.

We are honored to have Provost Bei Wu deliver a welcome address for this special occasion.

Alumni Voices: Jiang Xiaoyuan ’22

Jiang Xiaoxuan is an alumna of the Interactive Media Arts Low Residency Master’s Program. Born in Inner Mongolia, Xiaoxuan’s two greatest passions as a child were writing and horseback riding. After her undergraduate years at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, she began merging these interests—starting with short films and documentaries about horses. This passion led her onto a career path as an award-winning director.

Alumni Voices: Zane Fadul ’21

Zane Fadul describes what he did to land his dream job as a software engineer at Google, working on the reCAPTCHA team in North Carolina. Looking back, he says his NYU Shanghai campus leadership roles and involvement with the computer science community gave him the confidence to excel in his career and life.

Alum Voices: Savannah Billman ’19

Savannah Billman furthered her connection with China through the Yenching Program at Peking University. Now she works for the National Committee of the US-China Relations and edits a popular China jobs newsletter.

Alum Voices: Helena Ma ’19

Helena Ma has always had an entrepreneurial spirit. After graduation, she worked in multiple industries, from starting a meal kit service in Shanghai during the COVID-19 pandemic to working as a self-taught videographer and photographer. Now an internationally touring DJ and start-up founder, Helena shares with us valuable lessons she’s learned along the way.

Hu Haorui ’24: I graduated from NYU Shanghai in Spring 2024, and starting this fall, I am pursuing my PhD degree in Chemistry at NYU Graduate School of Arts & Science.

Chen Yujun ’25: I am furthering my studies at NYU Courant for a Master's in Computer Science starting this fall. I’m excited to deepen my research in distributed systems and blockchain, and to reunite with fellow Violets in New York!
