News from the college

Art Across the Curriculum

The new Object Lab exhibition, on view through Dec. 17 at the Williams College Museum of Art, features 40 works that illuminate key ideas from eight fall-semester classes in American studies, art history, art studio, computer science, history and dance. Elizabeth Gallerani, curator of Mellon academic programs, says that “experimenting and connecting interdisciplinary ideas in the liberal arts” is one of the Object Lab’s primary goals—and one of the reasons why students are excited to study at Williams.

Highlights From the June Board Meeting

At the June 2-3 meeting of the Williams Board of Trustees, President Mandel presented a progress report on the Strategic Plan, the trustees received an update on the Energy and Carbon Master Plan, and Director of Integrative Wellbeing Services Wendy Adam delivered a presentation about how Williams could take an educational approach to supporting student wellbeing. In addition, the board endorsed a phased approach to replace the Towne Field House. More details are provided in the complete board meeting summary.

Serving Veterans

For the fourth year, Williams hosted the Warrior-Scholar Project’s boot camp—a weeklong academic program taught by Williams faculty, staff and alumni that helps those with a military background transition to college life.

Faculty and Staff in Focus

  • “A mock wedding without the wedding rituals transcends religion or nationality,” says history professor Aparna Kapadia about a growing trend across U.S. college campuses in which South Asian students are holding elaborate mock weddings to showcase and connect with their culture.
  • Olga Shevchenko, the Paul H. Hunn ’55 Professor in Social Studies, reviews a 2022 book that examines the phenomenon of removal of people declared “public enemies” from group photographs in Stalin’s Russia.
