Endometriosis is a non-cancerous disorder that occurs when tissue lining the inside of the uterus appears in other parts of the body. Endometrial cancer, by contrast, occurs when cells in the endometrium begin to grow abnormally, forming a solid mass and potentially spreading elsewhere in the body.

Cancer is labeled stage IV when it is found not only in its original location, but also in distant tissues and organs. The more widely cancer has spread from the site where it is first diagnosed, the more difficult it becomes to treat.

But Evers’ clearest indication of her chances of developing cancer resulted from learning her family had a lesser known genetic predisposition to cancer called Lynch syndrome. About one million people in the United States (or 1 in 300) have the disorder, and most have never heard of it.
