New STS Courses Offered This Winter

STS 115: The Ethics of Developing Life-Saving Technologies for Children
This course explores the ethical implications of integrating new healthcare technologies, specifically in pediatric cardiac care, while teaching students to critically evaluate their impact on current practices and care quality.
STS 135: Constructing and Deconstructing Artificial "Intelligence"
This course critically examines the impact of AI on society by exploring the values embedded in its development, the inclusivity of its testing and regulation, the economic forces behind its growth, and its ecological footprint, while fostering an informed skepticism about how we conceptualize and name these technologies.
STS 142: Performing The Economy: Markets, Measurement, and Expertise
This course explores the concept of "the economy," its historical and social underpinnings, the methodologies for measuring it, and critiques the authority of economists by examining issues like the valuation of factory work versus housework and the racial dimensions of financial instruments.
STS 200S: Climate Politics: Science and Global Governance
The course examines the historical development of climate understanding since the 1800s, the interplay between climate science and politics through the 20th century to today, and key international agreements and debates, culminating in assignments focused on presentations and research papers. This course meets the STS Capstone requirement.
STS 200V: How to Think About Catastrophe Toward a Theory of Enlightened Doomsaying
This course will examine how human actions contribute to existential threats like nuclear war, climate change, and advanced technologies, integrating philosophical perspectives and the humanities to foster a deeper understanding of these issues beyond their technological aspects. This course meets the STS Capstone requirement.
STS 301: What is Science & Technology Studies (STS)?
This course aims to help orient students to the study of and careers related to STS. Weekly presentations by different STS-affiliated faculty on foundational works in STS, along with their own scholarship. Two article-length readings per session, plus a required Canvas discussion forum. Enrollment is restricted to graduate-level students. Required for STS Graduate Certificate.

Iris Eisenberger is Professor of Innovation and Public Law and Deputy Head of the Department of Innovation and Digitalisation in Law at the University of Vienna. Her research focuses on innovation and technology law, the protection of fundamental and human rights, and the intersection of law, innovation, and society. She has wide experience in interdisciplinary research and in conducting nationally and internationally funded research projects. She has published in journals such as Law, Innovation and Technology; Oxford Journal of Legal Studies; Computer Law and Security Review; and Nature Nanotechnology.

Stanford Vote Center

The Santa Clara County Vote Center on the Stanford campus at Tresidder Union is a 4-day Vote Center and will be open from November 2 to November 4, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and on Election Day, November 5, 2024, from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

The Vote Center is available for:
  • Registered voters who would like to cast their vote in person or drop off their Vote-by-Mail ballot
    • If bilingual assistance is needed there will be support at the vote center. Over the phone translations system is used if a bilingual speaker is unavailable.
  • Registered voters who would like to request a replacement ballot
  • Eligible voters who would like to register to vote referred to as Conditional Voter Registration
