Tales of the Creation of the Video Game Industry
Allan Alcorn, Tales of the Creation of the Video Game Industry. Before Pong there were several attempts at using electronics with some kind of display to play games. Most prominent was Steve Russell’s Spacewar! but it only ran on a PDP 1 so only computer scientist could play it. Atari was formed to create a new kind of arcade amusement machine that used digital computer technology to deliver a new, cost effective form of entertainment to the public. Pong’s immediate success allowed Atari to grow rapidly and create a new industry that is very healthy today. I will talk about the many challenges we had to overcome to create a viable business from financing a new company to dealing with regulatory issues that threatened to shut us down. I will talk about the constraints that the technology placed on us and how those constraints led to creative solutions. Read more.

Screening Eye Disease in Rural Nepal: Seminar, Music with Dr. Suman Thapa

With over 80% of Nepal’s population living in rural areas, patients are often required to travel hundreds of miles for a brief visit with a physician. Invented by Stanford researchers, Paxos Scope is a universal adapter that converts any smartphone into an easy-to-use ophthalmic camera. This presentation will discuss the results of this novel way to screen for eye diseases by applying tele-ophthalmology on the existing infrastructure of eye care in a country challenged by a harsh geographic terrain and limited human resources.

**With music to follow**

Suman is a singer-songwriter and has composed several songs based on places visited and life experiences. His group, Suman & The Blue Frets, plays contemporary blues that incorporates the ethnic Nepalese instrument called the ‘Sarangi’, along with piano, cello, and guitar. Join us after the talk for a performance! Read more.

Environmental Exposure: Photography and Ecology after 1970

Environmental Exposure: Photography and Ecology after 1970 draws on photographic prints and slides from the 1970s to explore a transformative moment in the visual culture of American environmentalism. Rejecting romantic myths of the unspoiled wilderness, photographers such as Lewis Baltz and Frank Gohlke presented depersonalized images of a “man-altered” American landscape, exploring tensions between nature, development and decay.

Exhibition curator, Michael Metzger, Andrew W. Mellon Graduate Curatorial Research Assistant and PhD candidate in the Department of Art & Art History, will discuss how a variety of American photographers sought new visual languages to address the urgent questions of energy use, waste and pollution, reflecting the changes in our environment and in our understanding of our place within it. Please join Michael Metzger after his talk at a reception from 7 - 7:30PM on the Geballe Balcony (Second Floor) of the Cantor Arts Center. Read more.

John Weller is a critically acclaimed photographer, writer and filmmaker based in Boulder, Colorado.  Nature photography has been his passion since childhood, and after graduating from Stanford University with a degree in Economics, John began pursuing media full time. He spent two years in California working for photographer William Neill and then moved home to Colorado, where he fell in love with Great Sand Dunes National Park. For one week of every month over more than three years, he walked with a 120-pound pack deep into the extraordinary landscape. With each trip, he further understood interconnections within the ecosystem, including his own. His goal solidified to communicate the value of pristine places, reminding people we are part of the same living system. Read more about John
