Did You Know?
Pizza boxes that are empty and do not contain food waste can be recycled in your curbside cart/single-stream recycling cart. Grease is okay. Remove box liners and pizza savers (the small plastic item used to keep the pizza box in tact) before recycling.
Boxes that are soiled with food waste can be composted through one of the County's six Food Waste Drop-Off Sites.

New 24-Hour Drop-Off Site |
Orange County Solid Waste is opening a new 24-hour drop off-site at the Jones Ferry Park and Ride Lot, located at 603 Berryhill Dr, Chapel Hill, NC 27516. The site is opening at 1:00 PM on March 18th, 2024, and will be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Residents and businesses can drop-off single-stream recycling, corrugated cardboard, and separate glass recycling. Site users are responsible for unloading materials and placing them in the correct container as the site is unstaffed.
As a reminder, single-stream recycling, corrugated cardboard, and separate glass recycling should never be bagged, and plastic bags, plastic film, and plastic wrap are not accepted. Additionally, the 24-hour sites do not accept trash; never leave garbage or other materials on the ground, as that constitutes illegal dumping and can result in a citation or fine.

Two new online forms are available on the Solid Waste website to assist residents and businesses with services and questions. The first form is to report missed curbside recycling collection, and the second form can be used to submit general questions and comments. A Solid Waste staff member will be in touch to address the information presented on the form.
The forms can be found on the left-hand sidebar on the Solid Waste website. To report a missed curbside recycling collection, please fill out the Missed Collection form. To submit general questions and comments, please fill out the General Questions and Comments form.

Environmental Enforcement |
Solid Waste updated and relocated its environmental enforcement webpages to make information more accessible. The webpages discuss illegal burning, dumping and improper storage, discharges into stormwater systems, littering, and scavenging. Please visit the Environmental Enforcement webpage and see some tips below to learn more about environmental regulations put in place to keep Orange County and its residents safe and healthy.

-
Did you know it is illegal to burn solid waste and non-vegetative materials outdoors in North Carolina? According to North Carolina’s Open Burning Regulations, outdoor burning is prohibited under most circumstances, and there are specific conditions for allowable fires. Leaves, branches, and other plant growth can only be burned under certain conditions. For more information on illegal burning enforcement, please visit the Burning webpage.
- Dumping and unauthorized disposal of trash, such as on the side of a road, is illegal. The entity to whom reporting of illegal dumping should be made is dependent upon the location. For more information, please visit the Dumping and Improper Storage webpage.
-
Substances other than stormwater cannot be disposed of in storm drains or stormwater ditches. To learn more about these regulations and how to report activities, please visit the Discharges Into Stormwater System webpage.
-
Acts of littering can be submitted to the NC Department of Transportation through an online form or by calling 1-800-331-5864. Do not report while driving.
-
Orange County prohibits scavenging from all Solid Waste facilities and recycling containers (excluding the Salvages Sheds). Materials placed inside Orange County recycling containers become the property of Orange County. For more information, please visit the Scavenging webpage.
