ECE Student Attendance and Withdrawal Procedures
Please send all forms for Excessive Absences, e.g., Excessive Absenteeism Form, Attendance Warning Letters and Withdrawal Request, to the Early Childhood Office to hold for reference when communicating with families and support staff.

Please review the following information and supporting documents.
Excessive Absenteeism Form: used to track unexcused absences (see policy for specific hours)
Attendance Warning Letter: used to document absences/tardiness and schedule a family meeting to address concerns (potential withdraw if parent refuses to cooperate)
Withdrawal Request Form: used if parent wishes to withdraw child (voluntary withdrawal) from the program and If a child needs to be withdrawn, due to following:
  • Poor and non-attendance
  • Student was enrolled but never attended
  • Toileting Issues
Please forward information to Estelle Morgan in the Early Childhood Office and cc Dr. Paula Knight to proceed with withdrawal. ALL withdrawals occur in the ECE office.
All forms are to be used for children who are experiencing excessive absences, tardiness and/or need to be withdrawn from the program. Please continue completing these forms, as needed, and submit to Ms. Morgan/ECE Office once completed. If a parent becomes uncooperative and refuses to meet with you to address concerns, indicate attempts made on the Attendance Warning Letter and in SIS. The ECE Office will follow up with the parent. Please forward forms back to Ms. Morgan once completed with signatures, reasons for absences, dates etc.
Magnet schools: Magnet schools are allowed to withdraw children, per the Recruitment and Placement office. However, if a child is withdrawn, please send an email to Lou Kruger/Estelle Morgan for reporting purposes. Once you complete forms, please forward to the classroom to maintain in students’ file.  Also, forward copies to Ms. Morgan in order to maintain and track information.
Please remember ...  We want our children to attend school every day, but there are times when unforeseen circumstances occur. When this happens, please stress to your parents the importance of their child attending school for academic growth and progress. When parents communicate to you when their child is going to be absent or late, it is critical to work closely with the building secretary to enter this required information into SIS. After you review this information and if further clarification is needed, please contact Ms. Morgan.
Paid Handwriting Study
The Occupational Therapy program at Washington University is conducting a research study to develop an app that will be able to evaluate motor deficits related to handwriting in both children and adults. The app will provide more accurate diagnoses and faster intervention than the current paper method allows for.
The current study involves healthy 4th and 5th graders without motor deficits, who will complete both the app and a paper cursive handwriting task. The app involves tracing shapes on an iPad with a stylus. The study takes place near Barnes Jewish Hospital, takes about 1 hour, and both parent and child receive $15.
A flyer with tear-offs is available HERE, or you can download a flyer to display or send home with students HERE.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Clinical Research Coordinator Madeline Thompson at 314-747-7724 or madelinethompson@wustl.edu

GOOD NEWS: Fall Safety Festival
On Nov. 7, Peabody Elementary held a Fall Safety Festival in partnership with the St. Louis Housing Authority, the St. Louis Fire Department and the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.
Activities included an assembly to discuss school safety procedures, followed by a fire drill, intruder drill and tornado drill. Students entered a mobile Smoke House to learn how to safely exit a home filled with smoke or on fire. They learned the dos and don’ts in case of a fire and practiced ways to safely exit.
Other activities included a mobile book library in partnership with Bring Me A Book, in which all students K-5 were able to select five books from the library. There was a K-9 dog show and a prize raffle, in which 10 bikes with helmets were donated by the R. Whittington Foundation and Biking4Books.
GOOD NEWS: Turkey Time!
Students at Nahed Chapman New American Academy had the opportunity to bond with a new feathered friend last week. Smudge, a turkey from The Gentle Barn, paid a visit. Students were able to learn about her and pet her. Smudge had so much activity, she ended the visit with a nap on Dr. Conaway's desk!

The calendar of Performing Arts performances for the end of 1st semester is sent to all academic leaders in the District after Thanksgiving.
If teachers haven’t sent Kaye Harrelson the date and time for any school or community performances between Thanksgiving and Winter Break, please make sure to do so, so your school is represented!
CURRICULUM CORNER: Science
The crosscutting concepts are the third domain of 3-Dimensional Instruction. They have application across all domains of science. They include patterns; cause and effect; scale, proportion and quantity; systems and system models; energy and matter; structure and function; and stability and change.
CCC #2 Cause and Effect – Events have causes sometimes simple, sometimes multifaceted. Deciphering causal relationships and mechanisms by which they are mediated, is a major activity of science and engineering.
For more information visit ngss@nsta.org.
