BYM Friend Alicia McBride shared a personal reflection on her experience working at the Friends Committee on National Legislation on 9/11, and how it helped shape her life and career in a blog post this week for FCNL:
As the country rushed towards war, FCNL hung a banner that said 'War Is Not the Answer' on its building, across from the Senate," she recalled.
Only gradually did I come to appreciate the clarity with which FCNL and its leaders acted amidst this tragedy. Out of all the fear, anger, grief, and worry of that day, on September 12, 2001 FCNL issued a statement ... that cut through everything to speak truth.

Join BYM Peace and Social Concerns Committee on September 30 at 7:00 pm via Zoom for a special conversation with Nadine Hoover of New York Yearly Meeting about Friends Peace Teams. Come learn how Friends around the world support one another in peace, justice, spiritual practice, and community transformation—and discover resources you can bring to your Monthly Meeting, school, or ministry. Friends involved with Friends Peace Teams are especially encouraged to attend and share their experience. All interested Friends are welcome! Explore resources for AVP, First Day School, conscientious objection, right relationship with Native peoples, economic justice, global connections, and student internships.

Winter Exodus Study Group |
Sabrina McCarthy (FMW) extends a special invitation to Friends to join a study of Exodus in February and March led by Rabbi Leila Gal Berner. Kriat Hakodesh – Reading the Sacred - is a Jewish practice similar to the the Christian practice of lectio divina, a silent, prayerful way of repeatedly listening and praying on a biblical text to derive its spiritual meaning. Rabbi Leila will lead us through niggun (wordless Jewish melody), listening carefully and repeatedly to a biblical text, learning about it followed by silent meditation responding to personal questions that link our own lives to the Torah text. Rabbi Leila offered a similar course on Genesis in 2024, with a special outreach to Quakers, that had many BYM participants.

Happy Hour for Friends at Mid-Life, Sep 15 |
An informal group of DC-area Quakers from several monthly meetings invites Friends in the middle years of their lives (Gen X and Millennials) to an informal happy hour on Sept 15, 5:30pm - 7:30pm at the Takoma Bev Co in Takoma Park, MD. We're not Young Adult Friends, but we're not signing up for the Quaker retirement community just yet! The Interfaith Alliance, as part of The Vote is Sacred campaign, invites Friends to a special de-escalation and bystander intervention training specifically designed for the upcoming election season. Come learn practical tools to foster peace and interrupt violence.

FGC Online Outreach Conference, Sep 25-27 |
Friends General Conference invites Friends to an online Outreach Conference, Sep 25-27. The Outreach Conference offers Quaker meetings tools to welcome seekers, strengthen their communities, and share the Quaker faith with confidence. The keynote speaker for the conference is Khalila Lomax, BYM's former STRIDE Coordinator, who will speak about creating diverse communities of welcome. Registration is $95. While FGC is unable to offer any financial aid for The Outreach Conference, they suggest reaching out to your monthly meeting if cost is a barrier. BYM wants to make sure all Monthly Meetings who want to attend The Outreach Conference can. Please contact GenSec@bym-rsf.org if you need financial assistance to attend.
