Hi Friends,
As finals approach and we close out the year, I want to remind everyone to finish strong, but also to slow down, enjoy the end of your freshman year, and spend time with the people you love.
Reflecting on my four years at Alabama, I am overwhelmed by the community and support I've received from this university's staff, faculty, and students, and I hope you find the same. As a first-generation college student, I worried about not knowing who to turn to when I had a problem, how to prepare for my future career, and how to talk to people who seemed like they knew so much more than me. What I came to find is that everyone at UA wants to see you succeed.
So, my advice is to go to the social event even if you're nervous. Apply for the program you don't think you'll get. Chase the things that matter to you, and if it doesn't work out, you'll be a better person because of it. The only people who will judge you for trying are the ones too afraid to do it themselves. Find the people who will be in your corner, support you, and push you to be better.
As we wrap up, remember how you felt at the beginning of freshman year, then look at how far you've come. Completing your first year of college is a real accomplishment, and you should be proud. I am confident that each and every one of you will achieve your dreams if you are willing to put yourself out there.
