Disability Employment Awareness Month & More!
Disability Employment Awareness Month & More!

October is Disability Employment Awareness Month, and employees with disabilities are essential to keeping our community operating, even during a pandemic.  Meet Mbenda, Janet, Donald, and Eloka, our Employment Services team at Montgomery County Correctional Facility (MCCF). While much of Montgomery County was working remotely, this team continued its essential work on-site.  They handle most of the cleaning, including locker rooms, gym, visitor rooms, and bathrooms, plus manage the trash both inside and outside the facility. Everyone works hard, and everyone takes extra precautions to safeguard their own health while at work.
Together with their DSP Mbenda, these people are vital to the operations at MCCF and  proof positive that inclusion works and strengthens the whole community.  We call that a job well done!

Don't Miss the Deadline!

Maryland Board of Elections officials are warning that a postcard about mail-in voting, sent by the United States Postal Service (USPS), could cause confusion about mail-in ballot deadlines. To be clear, mail-in ballots in Maryland must be RECEIVED–not just mailed–by local boards of elections by Oct. 20.  Also contrary to the USPS postcard, in addition to mailing in a completed ballot, Marylanders may submit a completed ballot in one of 270 boxes that will be posted in every county.  Click here for more information about the controversy.

Celebrating Our Direct Support Professionals

We had a great time honoring our dedicated and hardworking DSPs during Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week, September 13-19.  We celebrated by featuring DSPs on our social media, sending them gifts in the mail, and delivering meals to their work locations—375 meals over 5 days to 77 locations throughout Montgomery County!
It was a great week, and we hope you will help us carry this spirit throughout the year.  Our DSPs work hard every day and do an amazing job; they deserve our thanks every day!

Join us in a round of applause for Natalie Wermers and Justina Nelson, who were honored at The Arc Maryland's 2020 Awards Ceremony. Natalie received the Chapter Volunteer of the Year Award for her work as our social media intern in the summer of 2019. Natalie designed our media blitz, #ADayintheLife—a complex and impactful project that helped to spread the word about our mission, :d spread some smiles.
Justina received a DSP Award for her longstanding and exceptional work for The Arc Montgomery County.  She is a strong advocate in the community and on the job site.  She didn't slow down her efforts in the face of the pandemic, but worked tenaciously to ensure the well-being of our residents and maintain contact with her employment crew.
