Message from the Associate Dean and Extension Director

Last week Dr. Paul Brown completed his tour of duty of more than 35 years for the University of Arizona (UA) Cooperative Extension System (CES).  Paul has always been an excellent university professional and colleague.  He has provided a tremendous program to the UA and the CES during his entire career.

Paul developed and directed the Arizona Meteorological Network (AZMET), a statewide system of more than 30 automated weather stations in rural and urban settings. The AZMET system provides extremely high-quality meteorological data and weather-based information to agricultural and horticultural interests operating in southern and central Arizona.   Initial operations for AZMET began on 1 January 1987.  Mr. Bruce Russell has worked with Paul on the management of the AZMET system since its beginning.

Paul has served his entire time with the UA CES as an Extension Specialist in Biometeorology based originally in the Soil & Water Science Department that became the Soil, Water and Environmental Science Department, which is now identified as the Environmental Science Department.  In the past six years, Paul has also served as the Assistant Dean and Associate Director for the Agriculture and Natural Resource (ANR) programs in Cooperative Extension.  He has continually directed an outstanding statewide Extension program.

Paul will be missed as an Extension Specialist, ANR program leader, and valuable professional friend and colleague.  Please join me in thanking Dr. Paul Brown for his outstanding years of dedicated service and commitment to the UA and the CES.  We all wish he and his family the very best as he pursues all his goals and aspirations in the future.

Plan to make a day of seeing these delightful spring gardens -and pay a visit to the park while you're in the area!  Discussions on a variety of gardening topics will be held at each home garden.  The Demonstration Gardens at the Cooperative Extension (4210 N. Campbell Ave) will also be open for touring as well. Tickets go on sale beginning February 21st so mark your calendar now!
