Dear Denison Families,
We had a fun time celebrating Big Red Weekend the past three days. We welcomed over 1,000 alumni and guests to campus for athletic and artistic events, reunions of student groups, and a wonderful celebration of all things Denison. It was a great homecoming weekend! It was also wonderful to see so many of you on campus this weekend!
These next three weeks are filled with course registration for Spring Semester, so we encourage you to check in with your student about the classes they are selecting. Also check in on how they're managing the coursework, papers, and exams during this busy time of the semester.
As we near Thanksgiving, we want to express gratitude to our parents and families. It's been a wonderful semester, and we are grateful for all you have done to support your student. Each of your students makes our campus and our community stronger, more vibrant, and a better place, and we are so grateful that they, and you, chose to be Denisonians!
Thank you for all you do for your student and for Denison. We appreciate our Denison families!
Warmly,
Julie Tucker ’09
Director of Family Engagement

Planning for Winter Break |
|
|
Denison is fortunate to have a four-week Winter Break (Dec. 20 - Jan. 19), which means students can use that time in intentional ways with advance planning. Thanksgiving Break is a good time to ask your student how they plan to spend Winter Break — whether they might want to travel, take a part-time job, complete a micro-internship, or participate in one of Denison's opportunities.
Questions: How are you planning to spend your Winter Break? Are you hoping to line up a job at home? Do you plan on traveling? Are there on-campus opportunities you want to pursue in January? Are there steps you need to be taking now to put something in place?
|
|
|
Internships: Students can talk with a career coach in the Knowlton Center to discuss Winter Break internship opportunities or advice on obtaining a job back home over break.
Senior Career Ready Boot Camp, Jan. 15-17, 2025: Students participate in workshops to set them up for success and spend structured time finding opportunities and preparing and sending out many applications with a team of career coaches right there to support and guide them throughout the process. (Application deadline: Dec. 8)
Journey Program, Jan. 16-17: We encourage every student to take advantage of the Journey Program, which prompts students to imagine the type of life and career they want to lead post-graduation. The Journey Program helps students to reflect on what career path(s) might interest them and how to create a plan for their desired career path and how to utilize their time at Denison in the most powerful way possible. (Registration closes Dec. 7)
Summer Research: Summer Scholars spend 5 or 10 weeks pursuing research or creative work with a faculty mentor. Students receive a stipend and on-campus housing for the duration of their program. Students are invited to submit proposals for projects by Feb. 3. Over break, you could talk with your student about whether this might of interest to them.
Connect with Alumni: Winter Break can be a great time for students to connect virtually or in person with Denison alumni. Encourage your student to leverage the power of Ask a Denisonian to set up an opportunity to connect with an alum over coffee wherever they'll be over the Thanksgiving or Winter Breaks. Tapping into the power of Denison's network of 30,000+ alumni, students can ask a question, which is then answered by an alum with experience and background relevant to their ask. This often leads to in-person, Zoom, or phone conversations and expands students' Denison network.
Check out the Knowlton Center page for more Winter Break opportunities.

Nov. 12 | When Popular Films Come to Broadway
In recent years, Broadway and regional theaters have seen an increase in musicals based on popular films. From "Mrs. Doubtfire" to "Mean Girls," many big films of the last 40 years can now be seen in musical form, with many fearing that this trend marks the death of the "original" musical. Led by Denison's Assistant Professor of Music Theatre, Brad Frenette, this presentation asks whether the "original" musical truly exists and examines how the source materials that have been adapted for Broadway over the last century have shifted to include the most popular films of our time.
