Upcoming Events

Black History Month

Black History Month is celebrated throughout the month of February. The roots of Black History Month go back to 1926 when Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950), the son of former slaves, launched the first observance of Negro History Week in February of that year. Dr. Woodson dedicated his life to documenting and preserving Black history and culture and is often called the “father of black history.” What began as Negro History Week in 1926 was first celebrated as Black History Month in 1970 at the urging of students at Kent State University.
In celebration of Black History Month, Duke has welcomed notable guests to campus to speak such as Dr. Ruha Benjamin and Tricia Hersey, highlighted the contributions of six influential Black staff and faculty in the university's history, and will continue to have programs and events throughout the remainder of the month. Stay up to date through the Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture's webpage.

February Family Webinar Series - "Fireside Chat: Proactive Support for College Student Wellbeing"

This webinar will be recorded for those who are unable to participate live. The video will be posted to the Family webpage approximately 48 hours after airing.

Spring Breakthrough

Spring Breakthrough offers Duke students a unique alternative spring break. Students can spend four days (Monday, March 7 - Thursday, March 10) in a mind-stimulating experience on campus with professors and fellow students. Duke professors are offering 11 mini-seminars on a variety of topics to explore intellectual interests in a fun and refreshing way. Meals are provided. No grades. No fees. No applications. No stress. The only expectation is that students engage meaningfully with fellow students and faculty while exploring their intellectual curiosity. Learn more on the website!

Career Everywhere

Internship Funding Program

Each year, the Career Center provides summer stipends to approximately 30-50 undergraduate students who pursue unpaid or low-paying internships or research opportunities. The Internship Funding Program aims to reduce the financial challenges associated with participating in a wide range of summer experiences, thereby encouraging student participation in experiential career exploration and expanding the diversity of internship opportunities in which Duke students participate. Through the generosity of corporate, individual, and class donors, the Career Center offers $3,000 grants intended to be used towards living expenses and not compensation for the work being performed.

If your student is considering a low-paying or unpaid summer opportunity, please encourage them to explore the Internship Funding Program as a possible resource for their financial needs. The deadline for the application is February 28, 2022.
If your family or organization is interested in contributing to the funding possibilities, please contact Greg Victory (gregory.victory@duke.edu).
In previous years, the program has supported students completing internships and academic research in fields such as healthcare/medicine, social justice, environment/sustainability, nonprofit/advocacy, policy, international relations, clean energy, technology, education, sports/entertainment, animal science, journalism, museum curation, public relations, human services, law, and more.
Students are responsible for securing their own summer experiences and are not limited to pre-approved employers. Students will complete an application process for funding considerations even before they have been selected for that experience. More information can be found here

Duke students have been enjoying the winter weather! The most recent snow day yielded about two inches around campus, so students gathered to build snowmen, make snowballs, and go sledding.

In Case You Missed It

Summer Experiences Website Launch

The Office of Undergraduate Education's Division of Experiential Education recently launched the Duke Summer Experiences website. The website aggregates all undergraduate summer opportunities into one searchable database. Students can explore and apply to multiple opportunities through the new centralized application system.

Summer Research at Duke - Muser

Muser provides Duke students with regularly scheduled, clearly articulated, and equitable access to research opportunities across all fields. Research mentors are members of the Duke University research community who provide meaningful research experiences for students. Mentors are graduate students, postdocs, lab technicians, research team leaders, principal investigators, and professors.
Muser runs at least five rounds per year: start of the fall semester for fall positions, mid-fall semester for spring semester positions, spring semester for the following fall semester positions, and spring semester for summer positions. The timeline for summer positions is:
Saturday, February 19 at 12:00am - First day to apply for projects
Saturday, February 26 at 11:59pm - Last day to apply for project
Students can find more information and projects online: https://muser.duke.edu/projects.
