Meet Vivie Nguyen
As director for intercultural engagement, Vivie Nguyen helps students understand the many identities that inform each person and creates opportunities for Loggers to engage with and learn from each other. “Traditionally, diversity programs are committed to serving underrepresented students in higher education,” she says. “But ultimately, we serve all students, because everyone needs to be a part of the conversation.” Off campus, Vivie is on the hunt for the best food in Tacoma. Her picks? Ice Cream Social on Sixth Avenue, and Marzano Italian Restaurant. “Best lasagna around.”

HACKS & CHOPS In May, the city of Tacoma released artTown – Rewind, a collection of popular segments from the arts and culture series, and we spotted several Loggers and honorary Loggers in the mix, including Professor of Music Rob Hutchinson playing bass, percussionist Antonio Gomez ’93 giving viewers a glimpse into his artistic process, and frequent campus guest artist and collaborator, playwright C. Rosalind Bell, who often finds inspiration on campus.

Oppenheimer Cafe and Brown Family Courtyard

SHAPES AND PATTERNS After a very hectic week (part of a very hectic summer in a very hectic year), we thought you—like us—might appreciate a simple moment of Zen from campus. This view of Oppenheimer Cafe from above also shows glimpses of the subtle and often-overlooked geometric pattern in the brick floor of the courtyard between Harned and Thompson halls. The pattern is a fractal known as Sierpinski's Carpet, and is formed by dividing one square into nine congruent squares, and removing the center square—then repeating that act of dividing and removing to each of the remaining squares... for infinity.
