ABOUT HOW COVID-19 IS IMPACTING THE St. LOUIS REGION

The Office of Research Administration invites faculty from across disciplines to join the conversation on how COVID-19 is affecting communities, to explore collaborative research opportunities that can make a difference, and take advantage of emerging COVID-19 funding opportunities. Conversations start at 9:00 A.M. on Fridays throughout the month of June. Early Career Opportunities

Are you early in your research and academic career? Are you looking for a way to build a stronger funding and research profile? Early Career funding opportunities are fantastic ways to not just enhance and build a strong career in research but to fund the valuable work that you are doing in your field. Early Career opportunities are highly prestigious, can help to establish a researcher within their field, and provide a springboard to further funding and development opportunities. Summer is a great time to work on Career proposals or prepare for a future Career proposal. The ORA team is ready to assist you in putting those proposals together. Coming Soon! New IRB Submission System

The UMSL Institutional Review Board (IRB) will be moving to a new online submission system for IRB applications. Stay tuned for more information about the transition in the coming months.

Deadline to Use New NSF Biosketch Requirements Extended

On June 1, 2020, the National Science Foundation (NSF) will implement the Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG) (NSF 20-1) for proposals submitted or due on or after this date. The revised PAPPG implements a variety of changes and clarifications, the highest profile of which requires use of an NSF-approved format for the preparation of the biographical sketch and current and pending support.

The NSF has also delayed the requirement to use NSF-approved formats for the biographical sketch and current and pending support sections of NSF proposals until Oct. 5, 2020. The NSF encourages the community to use these formats and continue to provide valuable feedback as we enhance them for future implementation.

The NSF has made updates reflecting this implementation to the following policy guidance, websites and frequently asked questions:

Biographical Sketch section of the PAPPG, Chapter II.C.2.f;
Current and Pending Support section of the PAPPG, Chapter II.C.2.h.;
NSF-Approved Formats for the Biographical Sketch and Current and Pending Support;
Frequently Asked Questions related to Current and Pending Support;
Frequently Asked Questions on Using SciENcv; and
Frequently Asked Questions on Using NSF Fillable PDF format.

Webinars covering the use of NSF-approved formats as well as all of the significant changes to the PAPPG are available on the NSF Policy Outreach website.

Technology Transfer at UMSL

The Technology Transfer Office (TTO) at UMSL, which is part of the ORA, is here to assist faculty in bringing their research discoveries and inventions, including copyrightable works such as software, to market.

So, why do universities engage in Technology Transfer? Watch this quick video by the Association of University Technology Managers:

UMSL's TTO staff work to analyze the technology regarding intellectual property protection and the market need to determine whether patent applications should be filed and/or copyrights should be registered. For those inventions that can be protected (and even some that cannot), we then look for potential industry partners, which could include established companies and/or startup ventures, to license and commercialize the discovery.

We also process all Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs), Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs), and research-related fee-for-service agreements, among others, for UMSL.
