WHAT'S NEW?

HEALTHY HOLIDAY TIPS
Before winter break, we want to share important reminders to keep you, your family and our community safe in light of increasing cases of COVID, flu and other viruses. So please:
 - Get vaccinated for the flu and with the latest COVID booster for which you're eligible.

 - Assess the risk of infection in your hometown and when traveling on your community’s Health Department website.

 - Wear a mask indoors in crowded areas (and open windows for maximum air circulation).

 - Watch for symptoms of COVID-19, especially if you’ve been in close proximity to someone with COVID, and get tested and stay home and away from others if you test positive. You can also call
the Health Information Line at 631-632-5000 if you test positive or think you may have COVID.

 - Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers/cleaners are also effective.

 - Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder (not your hands). Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth; germs are spread this way.
Stony Brook Medicine employees can learn more about COVID from Dr. Paz’s message in the December 12 issue of Stony Brook Health Beat and by visiting the Coronavirus Update section of ThePulse.

HOLIDAY GIVING AND ASSISTANCE

With the season of giving upon us, you can help spread joy and brighten the holidays for community members in need by contributing to this year’s Stony Brook Cares/SEFA Campaign. Even the smallest donation – which can be one-time or per paycheck – can make a big and lasting impact on the lives of the hungry, homeless, sick or elderly.
While you can choose to donate to any of the 1,700+ charities available, six are exclusive to SBU, providing the opportunity to benefit our community: Stony Brook Child Care Services, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital Fund, Hardship Fund, General Scholarship Fund, US Military Personnel Scholarship Fund, and Charles Thide Foundation.

Please know, too, that Stony Brook University has resources for employees in need this holiday season. The Hardship Fund is available to assist faculty and staff members who are experiencing a personal financial emergency, and you can visit the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) website for information about additional financial resources. The Student Emergency Support Fund provides limited grant funding to matriculated Stony Brook undergraduate and graduate students experiencing an unexpected financial crisis that could impact their ability to continue their academic journey.

TIPS FROM HR: HOLIDAYS AND ANNUAL LEAVE CAP

With Christmas and New Year's falling on Sundays, our official holiday closings are Monday, 12/26 and 1/2/23. Departments may choose to operate with reduced staffing Tuesday, 12/27 - Friday, 12/30. Employees must charge appropriate accruals for absences beyond the two holidays. Stony Brook University Hospital, Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine outpatient facilities, and Long Island State Veterans Home will all maintain normal operations.

Also please note: The Governor’s office has announced that all unused annual leave can now be carried through 12/31/23. This applies to all unions, Management/Confidential and Research Foundation employees.
