InterNationalist, weekly news brought to you by International Student and Scholar Services

Friday, September 18, 2020 | Fall Semester 2020

Welcome back to all those returning to campus and Oxford this week and resuming in-person courses! Make sure you are following Healthy Together Plan guidelines and communicating with your professors on attendance expectations.

Reminder that to maintain your SEVIS record, you will need to be fully enrolled throughout the semester. If you need to withdraw from a course, please be sure that you are still enrolled in at least 12 credits (undergraduate) or 9 credits (graduate) throughout the semester to maintain your legal status. As always, meet with an ISSS advisor before making any decisions that may impact your legal status.

The deadline has passed for Miami international students to confirm their Fall 2020 study plans. ISSS is now in the process of compiling the enrollment numbers for our international population and will release the demographic snapshot in an upcoming InternationaList newsletter.

Immigration Tip
OPT season has begun for December graduates!
As of September 9, students graduating in December 2020 are eligible to start submitting their OPT applications to USCIS.
Please note that the OPT application fee is increasing from $410 to $550 on October 2 - just two weeks from now. It typically takes at least a week to prepare your application and get it sent out once you begin the process. If you are hoping to avoid the fee increase, start your application now! For instructions, please read through the OPT information on the ISSS website (see the “OPT Application Process” section).
Note that it usually takes at least 3 months for OPT applications to be processed by USCIS.  If you still have questions about the OPT application process after reading through the OPT website, please email international@miamioh.edu or schedule an appointment with an ISSS advisor.
