NEWS TO KNOW: Student Eligibility for Federal Benefit Programs including SNAP
To the NYU Student Community,
Earlier this year, the Biden administration announced that the federal COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) will end on May 11, 2023. With the end of PHE comes changes to the flexibilities related to student eligibility for federal benefit programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid.
Temporary student exemptions expanded SNAP eligibility for students enrolled at least half time in an institution of higher education who were either eligible to participate in certain work study programs, or had an expected family contribution of zero in the current academic year.
These temporary exemptions for students will end 30 days after the PHE ends on May 11, 2023. Eligible students can continue to apply for SNAP benefits during this time.
