Dear Colleagues,
These last few weeks have, literally and metaphorically, brought both sunshine and gray skies. As springtime nears, I extend my warmest greetings to each and every one of you and offer my thanks for your ongoing contributions and dedication to Portland State. I also acknowledge that we have challenges to face in the coming months.
For those in attendance at the Finance and Administration Committee of the PSU Board of Trustees meeting on March 6, you heard that we are facing a substantial structural deficit brought on by many years of reduced enrollment and increased costs. It has become clear that we must make difficult but necessary decisions for Portland State University to thrive. One such proposed change involves the Intensive English Language Program (IELP). Despite our best efforts and investment over many years, the program has faced consistently low enrollment and high operational costs. It was with a heavy heart that I recommended the closure of the IELP program to President Cudd. This recommendation was not made capriciously.
It is my hope that we will move forward together—looking to each other for expertise and perspective—as we build a university that meets the needs and demands of our students and serves our community. I remain optimistic that we can get through this challenging period and emerge better and stronger than ever.
I hope the storm clouds will pass and look forward to brighter days.
Sincerely,
Shelly Chabon, Ph.D.
Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
