THIS WEEK: December 8th Meeting Dr. Jocelyn Bonner - Mental Healthcare in West Africa
Jocelyn Bonner, MD hails from Hampton, Virginia. She attended Spelman College in Atlanta, GA, Duke University Medical School in Durham, NC and completed her psychiatry training at the University of Pittsburgh in PA. She has lived in the Pacifc Northwest since 1992 after serving as an Army psychiatrist for 4 years in Wurzburg, Germany. She is married to James Grimm, MD whom she met in their residency training.
Now a retired community psychiatrist and private practitioner, Jocelyn is a volunteer advocate for Association Saint-Camille in Benin. They serve the mentally ill, who are often poor, and unhoused. Due to cultural beliefs, many are shunned from their families. They are found chained up or left to wander the streets. She and her husband belong to an interest group called Treatment Not Chains, in partnership with a Canadian NGO, Les Amis de la (Friends of) Saint-Camille.
Jocelyn will give an overview of the plight of the mentally ill, the remarkable story of the founder and the unique treatment model.

NEXT WEEK: December 15th Meeting
Live Performance from South Eugene High School
We will have a special holiday program on Thursday, December 15th. Most of you recall our holiday tradition of having the South Eugene HS choir perform for us. It’s been a few years since they’ve been able to do so because of the pandemic. Due to some related regulations, they won’t be able to perform for us in person, but they are going to treat us to a live performance via Zoom on the 15th. We’d love to pack the house for this meeting. More details to come.

A Request from Camille:
It looks like we’re in need of a few additional people to deliver food boxes on December 21. Please let her or Randy know if you are available. It just takes about an hour and a half in the afternoon. This is a signature project of our club -- a real team effort that is very nice to be part of.

FUNDRAISER: Ducks Basketball
Raise Money and Have Fun!
Our Matthew Knight Arena volunteers will begin the 2022-23 edition of this fundraising effort by again partnering with Airport Rotary in running the concession stand for men’s basketball games. The season began on November 7, and extends through the first week of March.

|
It’s a really enjoyable way to raise money for our club, and in a manner that doesn’t pull from our own member’s pocketbooks. If you’re interested in joining this team of Southtowne volunteers, please let Randy know. We could certainly use a few more. We're nearly a third of the way toward our goal of raising over $5,000. Each person's volunteer three-hour shift earns our club $100.
