CHOPR Faculty and Policy Advisors discuss legislative response to nurse workforce challenges.
A meeting between CHOPR faculty (Drs. Karen Lasater, Eileen Lake, Linda Aiken, and Matthew McHugh) and Health Policy Advisor to Senator Bob Casey (Kate Samuelson) left much to anticipate for the future of nursing. Samuelson asked what legislative actions could be taken to retain nurses at the bedside, improve working conditions, and reduce burnout. Researchers pointed to evidence on safe hospital nurse staffing ratios as a mechanism for improving outcomes for patients and nurses alike. Returns on investments in staffing more nurses at the bedside translates into cost savings that directly benefit hospitals' financial position to sustain safe staffing ratios. Subsequently, CHOPR Faculty/Senior Fellows (Drs. Linda Aiken, Matthew McHugh, and Barbara Todd) hosted a policy discussion on legislative options with key health policy advisors of Senators Bob Casey (PA) and Debbie Stabenow (MI) on the Graduate Nurse Education (GNE) Demonstration findings. Under the Demonstration, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) provided reimbursement for the reasonable cost of providing clinical training to APRN students. CHOPR’s next step is reconvening the original stakeholders. The ten years CHOPR has invested in GNE policy intervention and research is paying off. Read more in our latest paper in Health Affairs.

Nurse Leaders gather to discuss Magnet4Europe project findings.
Nearly 100 nurse leaders from 65 U.S. Magnet® hospitals participating in the CHOPR-led Magnet4Europe Consortium, "Improving Mental Health & Wellbeing in the Health Care Workplace," came together for the first time since the onset of the pandemic at the 2021 ANCC National Magnet Conference in Atlanta, GA. Drs. Linda Aiken, Matthew McHugh, and CHOPR Postdoctoral Fellow, Colleen A. Pogue led discussions about major findings from the U.S. Clinician Wellbeing Study as well as next steps for the Magnet4Europe Twinning Intervention. Some of America’s best hospitals are twinned with European hospitals to introduce Magnet principles to improve hospital work environments. Dr. Regina Cunningham to receive the 2022 Norma M. Lang Award for Scholarly Practice and Policy.
CHOPR's longtime colleague and research partner is an accomplished nurse executive, scientist, and educator who has made significant contributions to advancing nursing practice and clinical care. She is the Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and is the Assistant Dean for Clinical Practice, University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. MORE
Professor James Buchan's new report on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global supply of nurses was published in CGFNS International and International Council of Nurses... Senior Fellow, Dr. Franklin A. Shaffer is co-author... Dr. Ann Kutney-Lee is lead author of a new paper in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, It is the first manuscript from her VA Merit Award that examined racial/ethnic disparities in quality of end-of-life care for Veterans... Dr. Chenjuan Ma has published a new paper in the Journal of Rural Health. Investigators found that rural agencies consistently outperformed on timely initiation of care over time... Dr. Allison Squires is lead author of a paper in the International Journal of Nursing Studies, The study found that home care patients with language barriers are at higher risk for hospital readmission... Dr. Betsy White was promoted to Assistant Professor of Health Services, Policy, and Practice at Brown University. She co-directs a $4.9 million CDC contract studying COVID-19 vaccine-induced immunity in nursing homes. MORE

Dr. Marta Simonetti is principal investigator of a new project in Chile titled “Nursing Workforce, Patient Complexity, and Safety Outcomes in Chilean Public Hospitals," funded by the National Agency on Research and Development. Simonetti hopes the findings will serve as the catalyst for hospitals to increase staffing measures. Drs. Eileen Lake and Linda Aiken are co-investigators (shown at left with Simonetti).

Dr. Margo Brooks-Carthon's new grant from Penn Nursing aims to determine the post-discharge care needs of Medicaid-insured adults with co-occurring chronic medical and serious mental illnesses. The pathway to addressing patients’ social needs after hospitalization adds funding to gain knowledge and expand improvements. Postdoctoral fellow, Dr. Jacqueline Nikpour is co-investigator.
