It was great to meet many of you during our Homecoming & Family Weekend last month. We had fantastic weather and a record number of guests who joined us on campus for a great football win, great food, and lots of catching up with family and friends. We hope you can join us for Homecoming & Reunion Weekend next year on September 27, 28, and 29, 2024.
As we begin November, midterms are thankfully in the rearview mirror, and thoughts turn to holidays, family gatherings, and colder weather. Students will have November 20-24 off for Thanksgiving break. As a reminder, the residence halls will close Friday, November 17 at 6 p.m. and will remain closed until Sunday, November 26 at 10 a.m. Finals begin on December 18.
Please see below for more details and, as usual, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns as we head into November at the Nest!

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging |
There are two events sponsored by Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging that we would like to feature this month. The first on November 8 is the induction of First Generation Students into our chapter of Tri Alpha, the First Generation Honor Society. We are excited to give these students the opportunity to come forward and represent their families and themselves. As a result of joining, they will also gain the support of first-generation faculty and staff on our campus.
We are also excited to celebrate the Festival of Lights on November 30 in the Cleary Auditorium. We will celebrate the lights of all faith traditions and appreciate all of our students, faculty, and staff for being the BRIGHT LIGHTS that they are.

As the holiday season fast approaches, it’s time that we think about how to throw an eco-friendly Thanksgiving for those who celebrate. Food waste is a serious problem in the United States that only gets worse during the holidays. 200 million pounds of food, equivalent to approximately 6 million turkeys, are thrown away each year. At the Office of Sustainability, we’ve developed a few tips to help you throw a less wasteful Thanksgiving dinner this year:
|
- Coordinate with attendees to avoid bringing too much food. Keep tabs on what everyone’s bringing so you can plan accordingly!
-
Make things from scratch when possible. Did you know that around 83% of greenhouse gasses associated with food come from its production?
- Consider going meatless, or reducing the amount of meat in your feast. Animal products require anywhere from 4 to 40 times the calories in crops to produce than they provide in nutrition.
-
Use washable or reusable serviceware. It may be tempting to use paper plates, plastic utensils, and disposable napkins when entertaining a large group, but it's much more eco-friendly, and cheaper, to wash your dishes and napkins!
-
Share leftovers with attendees and neighbors, and/or compost food waste from the holidays. Not sure where you can bring compost? Check out this resource to find a site near you!
