Grant Applications
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has issued a notice ‘Supporting Fairness and Originality in NIH Research Applications’ (NOT-OD-25-132) ‘providing guidance to researchers on the appropriate usage of artificial intelligence (AI)’. Applications which are developed by AI or have sections developed by AI will not be considered. If AI is detected in the applications post award, NIH may refer the award and PI to the Office of Research Integrity.
The NIH is also ‘instituting a new policy limiting the number of applications that NIH will consider per Principal Investigator per calendar year’ as part of NOT-OD-25-132. Only ‘six, new, renewal, resubmission, or revision applications from an individual Principal Investigator/Program Director or Multiple Principal Investigator for all council rounds in a calendar year’ will be accepted by NIH.
Research Security
NIH’s notice (NOT-OD-25-133) announced a ‘New Policy Requirement to Train Senior/Key Personnel on Other Support Disclosure Requirements’ which becomes effective as of October 1, 2025. Institutions receiving NIH awards are required ‘to provide training to Senior/Key Personnel on the requirements to disclose all research activities and affiliations (active and pending) in Other Support’ as well as ‘maintaining a written and enforced policy, on requirements for the disclosure of other support’. The recently implemented UIC research security and integrity training (RSIT) has been designed to address this training requirement.
The NIH notice is similar to the National Science Foundation (NSF) ‘Important Notice No. 149’ regarding updates to the NSF research security policies. The NSF requires "undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, faculty, and
other senior/key personnel" to complete RCR training. The recently implemented research security and integrity training (RSIT) has been designed to address this training requirements.
