Woodinville High School | Care - Respect - Leadership
“We remember those who were called upon to give all a person can give, and we remember those who were prepared to make that sacrifice if it were demanded of them in the line of duty, though it never was. Most of all, we remember the devotion and gallantry with which all of them ennobled their nation as they became champions of a noble cause.” ~ Ronald Reagan

WHS 2020 ASB Food Drive

Our annual food drive for Maltby Food Bank is just around the corner! We would appreciate your help in collecting non-perishable food items to give to our community. Woodinville will be having three drop off days in which you can bring your items directly to the high school. The dates and times are as follows:
  • Wednesday 11/18 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm in the Main Office loop
  • Wednesday 11/25 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm in the Main Office loop
  • Wednesday 12/2 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm in the Main Office loop
To limit contact, we ask that you place the food items in your trunk and then allow a staff member to collect them from there. No one will be allowed out of their vehicles to ensure the health and safety of all.

Through this food drive, students will have the opportunity to earn National Honor Society hours and class competition points. In order to make this possible, please label your non-perishable food items with the student's first and last name followed by their class (e.g. First Last, Class of 2023). For every 50 items that are donated by students of each class, 10 points will be awarded. Additionally, whichever class donates the most food items, will receive 500 bonus points! Each student will be allowed to obtain a maximum of two Honor Society hours, with 20 items being equivalent to one hour.

Now, more than ever, it is necessary to donate these food items. There are members of our community who are struggling to feed themselves every day, and with this food drive, we can prevent this from happening. If we all work together, we can help our community members and significantly improve their lives during these troubling times. We hope you will consider donating! Thank you!

Woodinville High School
Virtual Open House
Available on website through November 30!

The virtual classroom doors at Woodinville High School opened for our Falcon Family on Thursday, November 5. This experience provides an opportunity to learn more about your student(s)' individual teachers, with video presentations available for all WHS teachers across every department. The Open House agenda was sent via email to families on November 2.
The WHS Virtual Open House will remain posted throughout the month of November so our Falcon Families can revisit it at their convenience!
Mental Health Week: November 16-20

The WHS ASB Mental Health Committee has organized Mental Health Week which will take place November 16th through 20th. Mental health is so important and, especially in times like these, the Falcon Family wants to be there for our students, connect them with our new mental health counselor, Ms. Kakalecik, and overall just show support, even from a distance.

ASB is also starting a project called "Say What You Want to Hear" for students to help each other by anonymously writing about their challenges, coping methods, and ways to open up. The committee will be posting mainly through the @woodinville_asb Instagram account throughout Mental Health Week, as well as on the WHS "Mental Health Matters" webpage, published by Ms. Kakalecik, that is found under Counseling on the homepage.

Should you have any questions, please reach out to Activities Director Kurt Melton at kmelton@nsd.org or to Ms. Kakalecik at christinekakalecik@nsd.org.

Message from your WHS Counselors

Academics:
Counselors have been engaged in many conversations with students lately and noticed a few themes that center around: students feeling overwhelmed and anxious about their schoolwork and keeping up with assignments. We are also hearing that some students are not feeling motivated and therefore, not engaging with their classes. We recognize and honor that these are unique times in education that can create anxiety and avoidance responses.
We want you to know that you are not alone and that there are steps that can help students in each of these situations:
  • Attend class and turn on your video - teachers want to see your faces and can better be able to know what you are experiencing when they can see your face. Attendance can help you to feel more connected with the material and will help when you sit down to do your homework. Social connections (even via Zoom) are important right now.
  • Communicate that you are struggling. Communication might look like emailing your teacher or your counselor to ask for help, staying after class, or attending a teacher office hour. It might mean talking to your best friend for some words of encouragement. What about opening up to mom and dad about what you are feeling? Communication might even mean asking to be connected with a mental health counselor. These are unprecedented times and there is no need for us to feel isolated in our struggles. Let's talk about it!
  • Create a balanced routine. Humans are creatures of habit. Create a routine that works best for you. Work best after a healthy meal or exercise? Make sure you are building time into your routine to do activities that help keep you energized, healthy, and happy. Sleep is important to your growing brains- do your best to know when to turn off the lights and go to sleep.
  • Celebrate your successes. Give yourself permission to watch a funny video after you complete a really challenging assignment. Brag to your family how you were able to tackle 2 of your missing assignments on your "to do" list. Be proud that you attended the class that you were dreading today.
We are here for you! Please do not hesitate to reach out to your counselor or teachers for support.
College & Career Center:

Our seniors have been busy during this college admission season! Here are admission stats for the Class of 2021 to date:
  • 461 initial transcripts have been submitted via Naviance (up from 405 the week before) This statistic does not include what counselors have sent through Common Application or Coalition, which would increase this number.
  • 32.6% of the seniors have applied to colleges (up from 30.7% on 11/06)
  • There are currently 836 active college applications in Naviance.
Counselors continue to support seniors by writing letters of recommendation and by submitting school reports and transcripts. If you are feeling stuck with an application or you are not sure of your post-grad plan yet, please reach out to your counselor for support. Counselors are hosting another Apps and Chats Zoom Room session on Wednesday, 11/18 from 11-Noon. We look forward to connecting with you!

Social/Emotional:
We hope you enjoyed a relaxing day off on Wednesday and are taking time amongst your studies to get outside to exercise, to spend time with your families, and to get away from your room for a bit. As highlighted above, it's import that you are talking about how you are feeling and to get your stress out. Reach out to your counselor or check out our mental health counselor, Christine Kakalecik's page at: https://sites.google.com/view/mentalhealthcounselingwhs/home for more resources and for referral options.
Our Zoom Rooms are open! We want to connect with you:
ACT/SAT Testing
For information regarding testing, please refer to the College Board or ACT websites at collegeboard.org or act.org.  SAT testing on December 5th at WHS has been canceled. We can hope for testing in March but won't know definitively until early 2021.  Please note that many colleges do not require or consider ACT/SAT scores as they conduct a holistic review of incoming freshmen applications.  We highly recommend that seniors refer to the college website for specifics admission requirements.

Sincerely,
Your WHS School Counselors

Apply for Free & Reduced Price Meals Today!

While Northshore is currently providing free meals, this support is made possible by temporary USDA funding. If this funding changes, the District may be required to charge families based on their current eligibility for meals. Have you applied for free and reduced-price meals this year?

If your family qualified last year, you need to reapply this year to ensure that your student receives free or reduced price meals once the current free meals program ends. It is important to apply today so that your eligibility status doesn’t lapse. If an application was not in process for a returning student by October 14, 2020, the student’s account was automatically transferred to a paid account the next school day. Please know that the number of eligible students for free and reduced price meals connects to the District’s Title I funding, which provides additional support at schools to help students succeed. Additionally, if your family income has decreased, you may be eligible for free or reduced-price school meals.

In addition to receiving free or reduced-price meals, your eligibility also provides
  • Reduced fee for Camp Cedar Spring
  • Reduced fee for PSAT and Advanced Placement Testing
  • Reduced fee for sports/athletics
  • Reduced fee for summer school
  • Access to Backpack Program, which provides backpacks and school supplies
  • Access to Operation School Bell, which provides clothes and personal products
To find out if you are eligible and to apply online visit our website.
School Lunch Information
NSD is offering free meals for all children ages 18 and younger.
Students do not need to be enrolled in the Northshore School District to receive meals. NSD requires that all families wear a mask and maintain physical distancing when picking up their meals. Thank you for helping to keep our drivers and families safe.
For more information, visit the NSD Website.
Student Work Permit Signatures!
Is your student working this year and in need of their Work Permit Signed? If so, please have them contact their WHS Counselor via email and they can help get this signed for them.

Automatic Attendance Calls Resumed
Monday, November 2

Automatic Attendance Calls resumed Monday, November 2. This means if your student is marked absent for the day in any class, we would notify the parent or guardian that same evening of the absence. This is an important tool to help your student be successful in all of their classes.

As always, we still want you to call or preferably email the Attendance Office to report an excused absence for your student at whsattendance@nsd.org or 425-408-7410. If you find that the absence reported might be a mistake, please have your student reach out to their teacher first and then, if needed, the Attendance Office.

Power or Internet Outage - What To Do

We understand that weather incidents may cause a loss of power when students and staff are engaged in distance learning. Our district's Technology, Northshore Learns, and Communications teams collaborated with educators to develop a plan for notifications about power outages, access to service, and how everyone can prepare ahead of time to adjust and continue learning. Please visit our website to learn what to do if your power goes out or if your teacher's power goes out.

Washington's K-12 Internet   Access Program: Check Eligibility for Free Internet Access

Having reliable connectivity to the internet is critical for your student’s success during distance learning. The state recognizes this need, and has partnered with Ziply Fiber and Comcast/Xfinity to create Washington’s K–12 Internet Access Program, which gives eligible families free internet access so your student can connect to online learning from home.

This internet access opportunity will provide you with faster, stronger and more reliable connectivity than hotspots or tethering to mobile devices, which will better support your student. If eligible, your free internet access is available through June 30, 2021.
Complete information and the steps to check elegibility, can be found on the Woodinville High School Website.
