April has been a month filled with funding announcements for our field. First came the announcement on April 3rd of $1.5 billion available through the federal Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP), the most in the program’s 12 year history. RCPP grants are not the easiest to deploy, but federal officials stressed that they’ve implemented measures to streamline and simplify the program. Then a day later came the mega $20 billion Green Bank announcement. Although the lion’s share of funding will go toward traditional clean energy projects such as solar panels, energy efficient housing and EV charging stations, nature-based solutions – e.g. protecting forests, restoring coastal marshes or installing rain gardens – could also qualify for funding (Duke University’s Nicholas School has assembled helpful materials on nbs: Duke). As the month comes to a close, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) made it a trifecta with its proposed rule putting conservation on equal footing with other multiple uses such as mining, timber harvesting, grazing and gas extraction on 244 million acres of BLM Lands. We can’t wait to see what May brings!
