New STS Capstone Course

Seats are still available in STS 200Y: Reimagining Innovation: Sustainability, Democracy, and Human Dignity (4 units). The class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30–11:50 AM. This discussion-based seminar invites students to think critically about how innovation shapes, and could better serve, sustainability, democracy, and human dignity. Through interdisciplinary readings and engaged conversation, students will grapple with urgent real-world questions, learn alongside peers from across majors, and develop a meaningful final project that challenges conventional ideas of progress. This course is a great fit for Juniors and Seniors looking for a small, intellectually ambitious course that connects big ideas to real-world impact. You can view the full course description here.

How should we navigate the ethical and policy challenges of emerging technologies? CS 182W: Ethics, Public Policy, and Technological Change (5 units) tackles this question head-on, combining computer science, philosophy, and public policy. Taught this year by Dr. Mehran Sahami (Chair of Computer Science) and Dr. Rob Reich (McGregor-Girard Professor of Social Ethics of Science and Technology, and Associate Director of Stanford’s Institute for Human-Centered AI and Data Science), the course meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, from 3:00 - 4:20 PM. Students will explore topics like algorithmic fairness, content moderation, and AI’s impact on the workforce, examining how new technologies transform our personal, economic, and political lives—and the responsibilities that come with them. You can view the course description and course website online. For enrollment questions, contact Dominic Zappia.
