UC San Diego School of Medicine Ushers in the Next Generation of Empathic and Compassionate Doctors
|
The Sanford Institute for Empathy and Compassion is thrilled to announce eight Sanford Scholars graduated with honors from UC San Diego School of Medicine this month. They were part of the largest graduating class yet, which included 142 new doctors celebrated at the Epstein Amphitheatre on June 2.
These students doctors overcame many challenges during their schooling, including disruptions caused by COVID-19 and the rigorous demands of medical education. Through it all, this 2024 cohort of graduates remained steadfast in their endeavors to enhance empathy and compassion not only in their areas of study, but in their own lives. Each of them display an indomitable spirit and serve as a beacon of hope for a brighter, more compassionate future in patient care, healthcare systems change, and beyond. We are so proud.

These two visionaries were chosen to receive this distinction from their peers, and represent thousands of clinicians, educators, and researchers who continue to innovate and lead the palliative field to provide the highest quality care to patients and providers alike. Dr. Buckholz recently sat down with AAHPM to share insights into his life's work, his inspirations in compassionate palliative care, and what this Visionary award means to him. His words moved our team — and we hope they move you, too.

Sipping on: With the summer heat in full swing, I've been turning to coconut water and fresh-squeezed lemonade, which somehow manage to evoke a "tropical sunshine" vibe while giving me temporary fortitude against the swelter. I'm also embarrassed to admit that I'm an artisanal still water enthusiast.
Listening to: Recently I’ve been gravitating back to the instrumental work of A. Kanyakumari, Habib Koité, and Mark Knopfler, as well as new music from Natalie Merchant and Indosoul.
Reading: Currently, The Ministry of Time (fiction), Emergent Strategy (non-fiction), and The Empathy Exams (non-fiction)
Excited about: Fulfilling my mid-year resolution to try to explore at least one new park or hiking spot in/around San Diego every month this summer.
