Notre Dame expert Nitesh Chawla partners with Chile’s open data pioneers
|
Nitesh Chawla, founding director of the Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society, and Frank M. Freimann Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, recently traveled to Chile to reinforce ongoing collaborations with researchers at Chile’s Data Observatory. The partnership explores a new approach to analyzing Earth and space—one that puts observation data directly into the hands of people who can use it to promote sustainability, prevent natural disasters, and prepare for the effects of climate change.

| Lucy Training Workshop: Introduction to Python
|
January 25, 2024 | 3:00pm
246 Hesburgh Library
Deadline to register: January 22, 2024
|
Python is open-sourced, interpreted, object-oriented, high-level programming language. It is easy to learn and very user-friendly because of its simple syntax and readable code. The best way to learn a programming language is to do something useful, therefore this hands-on introductory workshop will cover:
|
-
Basic data types
- Creating and assigning values to a variable
- Using a function
- Import a Python library and use its functions
- Read tabular data from a csv file
- Select individual values and subsections from data
-
Perform operations on arrays of data

| Lucy Training Workshop: Tidyverse in R
|
February 1, 2024 | 1:00pm
246 Hesburgh Library
Deadline to register: January 29, 2024
|
This workshop series is designed to give an introduction to the Tidyverse packages in R. Tidyverse is a set of R packages that comprehensively deal with data wrangling and visualization using a common syntax.
The workshop will cover some of the most common packages and functions in Tidyverse using a variety of social science data.
To attend, please register by January 29.
