Research Security
Michael Scian in the Office of Research Integrity (ORI) will be having virtual office hours to answer questions and to explain the concerns of the federal agencies regarding research security. Office hours will be offered on Mondays from 11:00-11:30am CDT starting on June 15, 2026 (Zoom link for Mondays) and on Thursdays from 10:00-10:30am CT starting on June 18, 2026 (Zoom link for Thursdays).
The NIH issued a notice (NOT-OD-26-084) “Reminder – Definition of Foreign Components’ which explained that the agency has not ‘expanded the definition of foreign components’. Some items to note include, 1) ‘Foreign travel for consultation is not considered a foreign component; 2) In all cases, NIH recipients should report foreign co-authorship to the funding Institute or Center as soon as they are aware of it to determine what steps, if any, need to be taken; 3) Recipients must pay close attention to the NOFO which outlines whether foreign components are permitted; and 4) NIH-funded investigators should take care to accurately list their affiliations on publications to reflect where they performed the NIH-funded work rather than using their current address if it is different from the performance site.’

A post in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Extramural Nexus, ‘Helpful Reminders to Ensure Integrity of NIH-Supported Research When Using Artificial Intelligence’ provides “helpful reminders on the appropriate use of AI tools when applying, managing awards, and conducting the research process itself.” Although only the opinion of the NIH, this guidance may be applicable to other federal funding agencies.
