B’nai B’rith Housing (BBH) and Hebrew SeniorLife (HSL) recently came together to respond to the Town of Brookline’s Request for Information regarding the potential redevelopment of the Kent/Station Street municipal parking lot. We believe that a highly desirable senior housing option can be created that responds to Brookline’s dire need for affordable options. Together with HSL, we have extensive experience in real estate development, construction, and management, as well as a shared commitment to providing service-enriched housing of the highest quality. We are excited about the opportunity to partner with the Town of Brookline on this potential redevelopment, which would complement the service-enriched housing that we have created in Boston, and Sudbury, and the work that HSL has done across its portfolio, including the Center Communities of Brookline.

On June 5, we hosted an info session and community discussion on affordable housing in the Swampscott area. The event, which was held at the Swampscott Senior Center, included an update on The Senior Residences at Machon, remarks from local officials, and a conversation about the abundant need for affordable housing throughout the North Shore communities. Our staff was joined by the Town of Swampscott’s Pete Kane, Director of Community Development, who spoke about the Town's success and interest in furthering affordable housing options. Morgan Bell, Regional Director for the Office of U.S. Congressman Seth Moulton, Jon D’Angelo, Regional Director for the Office of U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, and Jon Thibault, Legislative Director for the Office of State Senator Brendan Crighton, were also in attendance to share how their offices support affordable housing and stressed the importance of constituents advocating strongly for affordable housing in their cities and towns. This event was a great opportunity to connect with more than 50 members of the North Shore community who care deeply about the need for quality affordable housing in their area.

Meet Mary Lou, a resident at BBH’s The Coolidge at Sudbury. Mary Lou previously lived in Sudbury for decades and raised her children there. She had intended to live out her retirement in Florida, but following the death of her husband and decline in her own health, she and her daughter decided it was time to return to Massachusetts to be close to her family.
For Mary Lou, one of the most important aspects of The Coolidge is the camaraderie. Friendly neighbors and conscientious staff, plus gatherings like summer barbeques and monthly birthday celebrations, create an uplifting atmosphere. “After my husband died, I went through a great depression and was in and out of the hospital all the time,” she told us, “Now my doctors are saying I am doing very well.”
The spring and summer are some of Mary Lou’s favorite times, enjoying the view of the Coolidge’s beautiful grounds and seeing neighbors walking their dogs, or sitting out on the veranda. She is thrilled to call The Coolidge home and her family feels comforted knowing that Mary Lou is nearby in a safe, healthy, and social environment.

"How Did Renting in Boston Become Such a Nightmare?" In an age when supply isn't keeping up with demand, and millennials and boomers are increasingly going head-to-head for the same apartments, Boston Magazine's Thomas Stackpole recently set out to answer this question. To help paint the picture and tell the story of Boston's housing crisis - past, present, and potential future - Stackpole spoke with Barry Bluestone (Dukakis Center, Northeastern, and 2016 BBH Distinguished Achievement Award Honoree), Rachel Heller (CHAPA), and our very own Jesse Kanson-Benanav, BBH Senior Project Manager, and chair of local YIMBY group, A Better Cambridge, among others.
